Walkthrough
Note: You must have listened to all of Hyvek's stories and completed Under the Black Rose before the required camp interaction to start this quest will happen
Find Mira Shahar (Southern Waste of Tarhyl at -1236 1357 • Vah Rehn camp) .
You say, 'Hail, Mira Shahar'
Mira Shahar pats the ground next to her. 'Hail, pet. Have a seat, let's chat a while.'
You say, '-Sit down.-'
Mira Shahar tells you, 'Let's get down to business, pet.' She favors you with a warm grin. 'Hyvek and I have been talking and we've got a job for you. You can have my Shahar banner if you complete it.'
You say, 'What are the details?'
Mira Shahar tells you, 'Hyvek and I were both taken from about the same time period. It wasn't long after the 'first ruins' became ruins--an optimistic, fearful time when the vah were pressing out on many frontiers, testing our boundaries. As part of that, the Vah Shahar sent an expedition down to the ruins to try to discern what had happened to the city there, and to see if it was suitable for us to rebuild it and settle there.'
You say, 'So what would you like me to do?'
Mira Shahar tells you, 'We'd like you to go to the first ruins. Nibble about the outskirts, killing whatever creatures live there now there in search of messages from the Shahar expedition, and speak with Hyvek so that he can help you search for the Vahl counterpart. You'll need my cipher key to decode what you find, but as an apprentice you've earned the right to carry it. Sew the four corners of the scroll together in a tailor's kit, using that key to guide you. The traveler says it will make for interesting reading.'
You receive Shahar Cipher Key from Mira Shahar.
Your journal has been updated. [The Liar and the Whore]
Journal Text: Mira has asked me to search the outskirts of the first ruins for the Shahar expedition's message-scraps which, according to the traveler, have survived all these years. I'm to combine the four corners of the message with the key she gave me in a sewing kit. I should bring the messages back to Mira after reading them myself. Additionally, I should speak with Hyvek about the Vahl counterpart.
Find Hyvek Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl • Vah Rehn camp)
.
You say, 'Hail, Hyvek Vahl'
Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'Hello, <Player Name>! Mira and I have been talking, and we have a project for you. There's a pair of banners in it for you if you see it to the end.'
You say, 'I'm listening.'
Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'Around the time we both were snatched, it seems each of our houses was planning an expedition to what you call the first ruins. At the time, the city had not been dead for long, but the events were just as shrouded in mystery as they are today. The traveler overheard us speaking and came to us with assurances that some messages from each have survived--she can sense these things, apparently. I'm not entirely sure I trust her, but it seems like a good enough idea.'
You say, 'So what do you want me to do?'
Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'Go to the first ruins and search around the outskirts. Kill whatever creatures live there now, look for messages from the Vahl expedition. You'll need this key to decode what you find. Stitch the four corners of the paper back together in a sewing kit, using that key to guide you. It should make for interesting reading.'
You receive Vahl Cipher Key from Hyvek Vahl.
Your journal has been updated. [The Liar and the Whore]
Journal Text: Hyvek and Mira have asked me to search the outskirts of the first ruins for the vah expeditions' message-scraps which, according to the traveler, have survived all these years. I'm to combine the four corners of each house's message with its respective key in a sewing kit. I should bring the messages back to Hyvek and Mira after reading them myself.

Sivyana/Tarhyl Pledged
Note: If you are pledged to Sivyana or Tarhyl, you must hail the NPCs who normally drop the scrap, shred or fragment you need. It requires 1,000 platinum per scrap or shred (Sivyana mobs), and 2,000 platinum per fragment (Tarhyl mobs).
Sivyana
You say, 'Have you found a piece of a cipher in your time here?'
a sivakian warrior says, 'Yes, I believe that I have. It had the name 'Shahar' on it. Why? What does it matter to you?'
You say, 'Give it to me.'
a sivakian warrior says, 'No.' The Sivakian waggles a finger at you. 'I know what you did to one-eye. I'm not stupid. I won't tell you where the scrap is unless you pay me--say, a thousand platinum. And remember, my corpse won't know where the scrap is any more than you do right now.'
You say, '...fine. Here's the money.'
The Sivakian snatches the money from your hand and flees, leaving a small scrap of paper behind.
You receive Scrap of a Shahar Cipher from a sivakian warrior.
Tarhyl
Note: Bloodfire Channelers and Elementals seem to only give Vahl fragments, while Destroyers and Acolytes seem to give Shahar fragments. Don't waste platinum trying to buy more than the four of each type you need.
You say, 'Have you found a piece of a cipher in your time here?'
a bloodfire elemental says, 'Yes, and it's a wonder I haven't burned it yet. What business is it of yours?'
You say, 'I'd pay handsomely for it.'
a bloodfire elemental says, 'Now you're saying something of worth, whelp! How handsomely?'
You say, 'Say, two thousand platinum?'
The Tarhylian accepts your currency and gives you a scrap of paper in return.
You receive Frgment of a Vahl Cipher from a bloodfire elemental.

He pushes one ear off to the side and flicks the other at the paper before handing it back to you. 'It seems you must dive deeper to learn what became of them. Press inward, recover more shreds of the message, repeat the process so we can hear the end of this story.'
Hyvek Vahl returned Vahl Expedition Report to you.
Give Hyvek Vahl:
- Vahl Expedition Report/Shred
Hyvek Vahl says, 'This... this is not what I expected. It reeks of the traveler, but as I said, she is often right... I should very much like to see where she is going with this.' He hands the message back to you, seeming loath to part with it. 'I have no doubt that there is a lesson for us in here somewhere. Go deeper into the first ruins, <Player Name>. Find the last fragments of the messages.'
Hyvek Vahl returned Vahl Expedition Report to you.
Give Hyvek Vahl:
- Vahl Expedition Report/Fragment

Hyvek Vahl returned Vahl Expedition Report to you.
You receive Vahl Banner from Hyvek Vahl.
You say, 'That's funny, Mira said the same thing.'
Hyvek's mouth hangs open for a fraction of a second before he starts to laugh. 'Oh she did, did she?'
You have completed a quest. [The Liar and the Whore]
Journal Text: I recovered all of the messages from both expeditions and got both banners. Hyvek now seems to understand what the traveler wanted them to learn here, I have no doubt he'll share the information with Mira at the earliest opportunity.
You say, 'Hail, Hyvek Vahl'
Hyvek waves to you. 'Greetings, worthy! I don't know about you, but I've never been so glad to be wrong.'
You say, 'Oh? What do you mean?'
Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'I thought I knew what the traveler was trying to tell me with those messages. I was mistaken.' Hyvek snorts. 'It turns out that I'd been worried about the ocean calling the lake blue.'

You say, 'You seem happy.'
Mira Shahar tells you, 'I *am* happy, pet.' Mira flicks an ear at the traveler. 'I had my doubts, but it seems that she really does mean to help now. She certainly helped me.'
