Walkthrough
Find Lyjan Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl at -1280, 1270, -23 • Vah Rehn Camp) .
You say, 'Hail, Lyjan Vahl'
Lyjan rubs the bridge of his muzzle when he sees you. 'I don't want to talk about it.'
You say, 'Did you find where a suitable pole is?'
Lyjan Vahl tells you, 'Aye. A froglok has one. Go to mielech, search for him--he'll probably be the only one willing to talk to you.'
Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]
Journal Text: Lyjan told me that a froglok somewhere in mielech has a pole I can use with the Rehn Banner. I should search mielech for a froglok willing to speak with me.
Find A sane froglok (Keep of Mielech at 873, -765, -193 • In a jail cell between named camps.) .
You say, 'Hail, a sane froglok'
a sane froglok says, 'For us, to know them is to know from where we fell long ago, and for them, to know us is to see what they might yet become. Is it fair that he should try to lift us up even as we pull them down?'
You say, 'I'm told you might have a pole that would fit this banner.'
The froglok watches you for a long time, blinking first one eye, then the other. After a long moment, he speaks. '...yes. Who are you, that you seek to fly that standard high? I'll not barter with a thief.'
You say, 'It was given to me.'
a sane froglok says, 'I smell no lie on you. Perhaps it was. Very well: you may have the standard. It is the last of its kind. You must take great care. And first, I think, do a thing. I'm none for cruelty but such a thing is valuable and a fair price is all I will ask.'
You say, 'What do you want me to do?'
a sane froglok says, 'Take this knife. Give it to twenty of Mielech's most powerful servitors, and then to Mielech himself. Make them bleed and make them suffer. Only then will I give you what you seek.'
You receive Knife of Madness from a sane froglok.
Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]
Journal Text: The so-called 'sane froglok' wants me to give his knife to twenty of Mielech's most powerful servants, and then to Mielech himself. After I do this, he will give me the pole.
Servitors of Mielech
Note: When you trade an NPC the Knife of Madness they will be healed to full, so it is a good idea to pull one at a time and give them the knife quickly.
Note: Repeat this step twenty times. At this point, giving the Knife of Madness will no longer trigger any emotes.
Give the Knife of Madness to a any of these NPCs:
The froglok scrambles away from the knife, coughing up misty clouds of blood!
The golem moans as small beads of blood form on its surface and drip away, drawn toward the knife.
Once the NPC dies, a froglok spirit will spawn.
Note: It seems these spirits will act a bit different based on who gets the kill shot. If the person on the quest gets the skill shot the spirit will spawn near you and you will be able to hail it. If another group member gets the kill shot they will spawn near them and often begin to attack them. If this happens they will not respond to a hail, so simply trade them the Knife of Madness for credit.
You say, 'Hail, a froglok spirit'
The froglok spirit floats near the body, trapped and unable to escape.
You say, '-Hold the knife out to the spirit.-'
The knife absorbs the froglok spirit.
Mielech the Reanimated
Note: Mielech the Reanimated is a raid boss. More than one group may be necessary to complete this step. There is also a * version of Mielech the Reanimated which will work for this step.
Find Mielech the Reanimated (Mielech's Lair •) .
Note: When you trade Mielech the Reanimated the Knife of Madness they will be healed to full, so it is a good idea to give them the knife quickly.
Give Mielech the Reanimated:
Mielech rears back from the knife, screaming as webs of darkness spread across his eyes!
Mielech the Reanimated roars, sending a cloud of misted blood floating out into the room. The cloud swirls about in the air before streaming into the knife!
Kill Mielech the Reanimated
Note: The star version of Mielech the Reanimated will respawn somewhat quickly after the dragon is killed, so talk to A sane froglok with some mount of haste.
A sane froglok appears nearby.
You say, 'Hail, a sane froglok'
a sane froglok says, 'You have done what I asked.' The froglok blinks first one, then the other, then both eyes at you. 'Give me my knife and I will give you your flagpole.'
Give a sane froglok:
a sane froglok says, 'Good. Now begone from this place and never bother me again. My charity is all used up.'
You receive Ancient Standard from a sane froglok.
Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]
Journal Text: The froglok gave me an ancient standard, fit to bear the Rehn Banner. I should return to Lyjan for more information.
Return to Lyjan Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl at -1280, 1270, -23 • Vah Rehn Camp) .
You say, 'Hail, Lyjan Vahl'
Lyjan nods at you. 'You retrieved the standard. Good. I still don't know why they sent you after it, but you'll find that it's very useful in it's own right. I suspect you'll make a fine standard-bearer.'
You say, 'How do I attach the banner to the pole?'
Lyjan Vahl tells you, 'That part's a clear sky.' Lyjan flicks an ear at the pole. 'Just use any tailoring kit to combine that with a banner. It's a very simple process--you needn't worry about damaging it. When you're done using a standard, use the sewing kit to separate the pole and banner again.'
You say, 'Why is this pole special?'
Lyjan Vahl tells you, 'It's part of an old battle standard, designed the channel the inherent power of whatever banner is affixed to it. The more powerful the symbol, the more powerful the combined standard.'
You say, 'The power of the symbol? I'm not sure what you mean.'
Lyjan Vahl tells you, 'Symbols, like the banners of the great houses, are focus points for belief. Every attitude held by anyone about the thing the symbol represents influences that symbol in some small way. Poles of the type you have channel the energy created by such focused belief. While few people today know of the old houses, their old power still lingers.'
You say, 'What should I do now?'
Lyjan shrugs at you. 'We're still planning our next move, but Nevaldan has 'learned' the whereabouts of a final refugee. Other than that, the traveler seems to think that if you start asking around, more banners from the old houses will turn up.'
Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]
Journal Text: Lyjan explained to me how to use the Ancient Standard. I should ask Nevaldan for the locations of the last refugee. Alternately, I can talk to the other vah in the encampment to see if I can get more banners to use with it.
Combine in a Sewing Kit to create Standard of the Vah Rehn:
- Rehn Banner
- Ancient Standard
Note: From this point on, you may combine your current Standard in a Sewing Kit to break apart the Banner and Ancient Standard. Any of the Vah Banners you collect may be combined with the Ancient Standard in a Sewing Kit to create a new Vah standard.
Find Nevaldan Rehn (Southern Waste of Tarhyl at -1240, 1290, -22 • Vah Camp) .
You say, 'Hail, Nevaldan Rehn'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'Hail, <Player Name>. You've done very well so far. Has Lyjan explained what the next step is?'
You say, 'He has. Where can I find the last refugee?'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'In the Plane of Torment, I fear.' Nevaldan shakes his head. 'And don't ask me why he's there--I have no idea why she does any of the things that she does. You can't simply sail in and start killing like you did for the others, either. You'll have to ask the traveler for details on how to free him.'
Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]
Journal Text: The last refugee is located in the Plane of Torment, but retrieving him will be tricky. I'll need to get the details from the traveler personally. Alternately, I can talk to the other vah in the encampment to see if I can get more banners to use with the standard I recovered.
You say, 'Why do you trust this traveler person so much?'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'Because I have no choice.' Nevaldan's ears lay flat back. He begins to speak under his breath. 'Like or not, we're here, and that wench is the only person with any idea what's going on. I know more than I say, true, but if you think my map's much clearer than yours is, you're mistaken. The blunt truth is that the vah are close to extinction and we need her help to get back on our feet.'
You say, 'What *do* you know that I don't?'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'Little.' Nevaldan shrugs. 'I know who the traveler is.'
You say, 'Shaylan wouldn't tell me, but you know me better than she does. Don't I deserve to know?'
Nevaldan sighs. '...aye, you do. <Player Name>, the woman we know as the traveler is a direct manifestation of Jayla.'
You say, 'That... *huh*. That just raises *more* questions.'
Nevaldan's voice is bitter, seething with fury. 'Oh, not so many as you might think. She's the god of knowledge, isn't she? Isn't it natural that after so many hundreds of years of watching vah live and die in crushing poverty and near-starvation in dank caves mere meters away from her empty city that she would be at least a *LITTLE* curious about us? After all, there are some things you can't learn by ordering your guards to turn away a helpless group of refugees. Of course, you could always ask *her*, but you'll have to ask pretty loudly if you expect to beat an answer out of the solid block of ice that witch calls a soul.'
You say, 'I'd suspected as much. I wonder why she's doing this?'
Nevaldan's voice is bitter, seething with fury. 'That part's obvious.
You say, '...I had thought you were simply angry at her for tearing you away from your old life.'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'And what a life it was! I saw the fall of my people, the destruction of our cities. I watched us lose everything we had. I lived for years in the caves just outside Jayla's miserable city. I *personally* asked her minions for refuge. They said they would ask, and they did. The answer was no. Over half our number died during the first winter, but every time we asked, the answer was *always* no. But now... *now* she has time for us! Now, so much later *NOW* she can hear us! But is it to help? Is to to actaully *answer* a gods-damned *prayer*? OF COURSE NOT! All she wants to do is jerk us around on little strings for stars-know-what insane arbitrary little purpose that's cooking in her inscrutable brain.'
You say, 'Why now? Why pull vah to here from all over?'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'I have no idea.' Nevaldan spits. 'She evades all my questions. At least she'll listen to them, which is more than I got before you found Shaylan. The 'traveler's attitude shifted winds immensely after that.'
You say, 'Is it safe to talk that way about a god?'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'Of course not. Not only is she incredibly dangerous, but our people are in the water and she's got the only rope. I must be respectful around her at all times.'
