Walkthrough

Note: This is a sidequest of The Vah. It is received by talking to the Vah you rescued as a Hidden Presence from Sorcerer's Labyrinth.

Find Araghin Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1221, 1393  • Vah Rehn camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Araghin Vahl'
Araghin Vahl tells you, 'Ah, <Player Name>.' He reaches for a small vial hanging around his neck, then pauses. His claws click along the vial, but leave it be. 'And what can I do for you, hrm?'
You say, 'What was that you said in the labyrinth? About this camp?'
Araghin Vahl says, 'Nothing. Nevermind--oh, nevermind the nevermind.' Araghin pulls out a kerchief and wipes sand off his muzzle with it while he talks. 'This camp isn't the real one, you know. We just take it from the orcs from time to time. The one up in the mountains is nicer than this, to be sure, but it's not nicer enough, if you catch my drift.' He pulls the kerchief away, then lays an ear back and flicks the other at the sand on it.
You say, 'Why didn't you want to say that before?
Araghin Vahl tells you, 'Ah, that. I didn't know you, as it were. But you've clearly been here before, you've worked with Harhyn and such, so I was out of place. Habit, you know. Very sorry.'
You say, 'What's that supposed to mean?'
Araghin Vahl tells you, 'Well, like I said before, we vah have a--not an image per se, but a certain shared self-conciousness, as it were. We care deeply about how we appear, and about how each other appears. Specifically, the esteem must match the reality, though I would grant that one direction is a bit more important than the other--if people overvalue us, we do not hasten to correct them, but we feel undeserved scorn very strongly.
You say, 'I'm not sure I follow.'
Araghin Vahl tells you, 'This place is not very good, <Player Name>. Granted, it's better than the caves that some experienced, but it's nothing compared to the old empire we once enjoyed. It's hard enough living with that, but having outsiders know it too drives the point more cleanly home precisely because the perception is *not* innacurate. Having an outsider consider us to be mangy refugees raises our hackles, but tamps them down again in an instant as we inevitably come to a fresh realization of our status: we are, indeed, mangy refugees.'
You say, 'Is there something that can be done about it?'
Araghin smiles and pulls a scroll from his robes. 'I had hoped you would ask.' He unrolls the scroll in front of you. 'I know a bit about architect-ing, having studied under one once upon a time.' His ears flag for a moment but his voice doesn't stop. 'The Rehn have lived in these cliffs for some time in a static sort of way--tents and subsistence hunting, for the most part. We must change that, and that change must start with one building. It need not be big. It must only be a start.'
You say, 'Where do I come in?'
Araghin Vahl tells you, 'The first new stone building must be very sturdy, <Player Name>. It will be as much monument as dwelling. If it were to collapse, even several years from now, the blow to morale would be devastating. We are too near the cliff for three-steps-forward-two-steps-back to be safe.' He taps a claw on a few parts of the scroll. 'These stones are all from ancient, powerful places, suffused with magic and strength. Retrieve them to be our cornerstones. Overkill, I know, but with this much strength behind it, our first new building--simple stone box though it may be--will stand for an eternity. More than strong enough for future generations to add to it.'
You say, 'Where can I find these cornerstones?'
Araghin points at each item in turn. 'The first is a stone saved from our old city. I already located one of those, so you needn't worry about it. The other three are harder. First, find a Ysthar stone in their temple of Cmalath. I don't imagine they lug big blocks about often, so you may have to hunt for quite a while to find it. Only get the most powerful magicked ones, though--nothing from the weaker Ysthar castes. You might think their mines would be the place to look, but remember that we need a post-magic stone. Freshly-cut will do us no good.'
You say, 'Where are the other two?'
Araghin Vahl says, 'The buildings in the emberflow caverns will provide the next block, a burning stone brought in from the inferno. Any will do, as the buildings there are more-or-less the same. The last cornerstone will come from the deepocean creatures--their statues are nearly timeless. Haul them all back to me so we can begin construction. Do this and I'll have a special reward for you. I guarantee you'll like it.' He grins mischeviously.

Give Burning Cornerstone, Ysthar Cornerstone and Deepocean Cornerstone to Araghin Vahl.

Araghin Vahl tells you, 'Excellent, <Player Name>. You have done us a great service this day.'
Araghin bows, then pulls a wand from his cloak. 'When they were still made, these were very expensive, you know. The secret of their construction was lost with the city. Please, don't lose it.'

You receive Wand of Gate from Araghin Vahl.

You gain 85000 experience!!
