Walkthrough

Spawning the Vah Camp

Find A vah rehn scout (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  •) .

A vah rehn scout says, 'Hail, <Player Name>. If you're ready, I can lead you to the camp. A lot has happened since we last spoke. You should go talk to Haryn, he can fill you in.'

Follow a vah rehn scout and he will clear the Vah camp area. Hail him again to spawn the camp.

The orcs flee from their tents at the sight of the scout. They know that more Vah can't be far behind.
a Vah rehn scout says, 'Okay, the coast is clear. Say when.'
You say, 'Hail, a Vah rehn scout'
A Vah rehn scout waves, then pads off. The Vah rehn refugees come out of hiding.

Find Haryn Rehn (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1240, 1420, -23  • Vah Rehn camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Haryn Rehn'
Haryn Rehn tells you, 'And a pleasant hail to you, <Player Name>!' Haryn manages his best imitiation-grin. 'These are exciting times. I'm glad you could share them with me. Or should I say, 'share them with us'?'
You say, 'Who's us?'
Haryn bows. 'My people, of course. The house of Rehn, criminals and their offspring, forced to abandon their family name and live in these mountains. Hah! Strange, to see both as blessings.'
You say, 'So you were exiled by *criminals*?'
Haryn Rehn tells you, 'Aye.' Haryn's ears fall. 'I would rather not speak of it. I'm back now, that's what matters.' His ears perk back up. 'Besides, there's work to be done.'
You say, 'What work?'
Haryn Rehn tells you, 'Mrr, so you haven't heard?' Haryn points at the two tufted vah in the tall tents. 'They aren't the only new vah to have mysteriously arrived. There's a handful of vah turning up here and there. Word is, they just appeared. They were doing what they normally did, they saw a bright light, and then they showed up--no inkling how they got there or why.'
You say, 'So what do we have to do?'
Haryn Rehn tells you, 'You'll have to ask Nevaldan--he's one of the men you rescued. Seems like he's in charge now.' Seeing your expression, Haryn flicks an ear to the side. 'Hey, I'm just happy to be back. From what I hear, Nevaldan is some kind of a bigwig. I have no idea who he is and most folks I've asked have never seen him before, but I'm not asking too many questions.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: Haryn has been accepted back to his people. He was much more willing to share details, though he still kept some secrets to himself. I'm to speak with Nevaldan Rehn if I wish to know more.

Find Nevaldan Rehn (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1240, 1290, -22  • Vah Camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Nevaldan Rehn'
Nevaldan waves you in. 'Ah, <Player Name>, I was wondering when you'd stop by.'
You say, 'I have a few questions...'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'Ask away.' Nevaldan spreads his hands, palms upward. 'The skies are clear. You helped us a great deal, and may help the vah even more in the days to come. I will tell you what I can.'
You say, 'How can I help more, then?'
Nevaldan Rehn tells you, 'We've heard rumor of more vah survivors cropping up, but some of them are places we can't safely go. Hopefully, you'll be able to help with that, but first we'll need to get more Marks. Speak with Lyjan. He should know where some can be found.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: More vah survivors have surfaced, scattered far and wide. I would like to help retrieve them, but first I have to find more Marks to bring them back to the camp. To that end, I must speak with Lyjan.

Find Lyjan Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1280, 1270, -23  • Vah Rehn Camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Lyjan Vahl'
Lyjan's head jerks up. 'Er, greetings, <Player Name>.' He bows. 'I didn't get a chance to thank you for rescuing me. I am in your debt.' His words are smooth, his inflection precise--the universal accent of the wealthy.
You say, 'Nevalden said you knew where more Marks could be found?'
Lyjan cocks an ear to the side. 'He did? Why-' Seeing your expression, he pauses, then changes tack. 'Aye, I know where more Marks can be found. At least theoretically.'
You say, 'Where's that?'
Lyjan Vahl tells you, 'About three years ago, a small band of mechanical raiders attacked a convoy and seized a shipment of Marks bound for the capital. We believed they were from the Rust, but the entrance to that region collapsed before we could act. Since it's back open, you should be able to enter. That the machines never struck suggests they were unable to use the Marks. Most likely they just threw them away. I'd ask the locals, they'd know more.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: Lyjan told me of a lost crate of Marks. He believes it is now located somewhere within the Rust, and that the locals there may know more.
You say, 'Wait, three years ago? The entrance was still sealed then.'
Lyjan bows his head. 'Aye... my mistake.'
You say, 'That's it?'
Lyjan Vahl tells you, 'Unfortunately, no. If you manage to find the Marks, we still have to change them. For now, all they'd do is hurl the caster into oblivion--they must be attuned with our...' he pauses briefly, ears wilting. 'Our new home. Bring me the crate when you find it.'

Spawning Jaklin

Note: You will need to have indifferent faction with The Iron Dead in order to spawn the star version of Jaklin. Kill Free Machines that are left from the zone in to increase this faction. If Jaklin is already up, feel free to skip talking to a rogue necromancer.

Find a rogue necromancer (The Rust  •) .

You say, 'Hail, a rogue necromancer'
a rogue necromancer says, 'Yes, <Player Name>? What is it?'
You say, 'I had some questions.'
a rogue necromancer says, 'Take them to Jaklin, then, if you can find him. I'm not a guide.'
You say, 'He doesn't seem to be around. Could you fetch him for me?'
a rogue necromancer says, '...Fine.'
The necromancer mumbles some arcane words of messaging. In a moment, Jaklin stands in the usual place.

Note: Talking to the star version of this NPC, *Jaklin, Traitor to the Machin  [sic], works for this step.

Find Jaklin, Traitor to the Machine (The Rust  at 1518, 974, -37  •) .

You say, 'Hail, Jaklin, Traitor to the Machine'
Jaklin sets down his book. 'What is it, <Player Name>? I'm a busy man.'
You say, 'Do you know anything about an ancient crate of stolen amulets?'
Jaklin, Traitor to the Machine says, 'A what now?'
You say, '-Describe the crate.-'
Jaklin, Traitor to the Machine says, 'You know, I actually do remember seeing something like that. It was so long ago.'
You say, 'If it still exists, do you know where to find it?'
Jaklin, Traitor to the Machine says, 'Aye, I do. It was put in deep storage in the factory when we weren't able to get the blasted things working. We tried for a century or two, as I recall.'
You say, 'I need them. How would I get to them?'
Jaklin, Traitor to the Machine says, 'From Clockwork. He'll probably demand a steep price, but he's a pragmatic sort. You'll be able to work something out. You may need to find someone to help you get into the factory, however. The key is hard to come by.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: Jaklin told me that the crate of Marks is likely in Clockwork's hands, but that Clockwork would probably be willing to make a deal for it.
Note: You or someone in your group will need a Key to the Factory for this next step. Clockwork roams around the entire factory so there's no reason to kill anything if you're worried about not being able to get to him. He will eventually wander back to the entrance area so just be patient if you don't immediately see him.

Find Clockwork (The Rust  •) .

You say, 'Hail, Clockwork'
Clockwork says, 'Why no, <Player Name>, I don't at all mind if you come in. Quite courteous of you to ask.'
You say, 'I'm told you might know how to find a certain crate of stolen Marks.'
Clockwork pauses. The gears in his head speed dramatically for a moment, then return to their slow, regular ticking. 'Yes, I do. What is your interest in the matter?'
You say, 'I'd like to purchase it, if you still have it.'
Clockwork says, 'Obviously, but what need do you have for it?'
You say, 'I'd rather not say. Will you sell it or not?'
Clockwork delays before answering. 'No. I have no use for money. A trade, however, would be acceptable. Bring me some of the antimagic ablative plating from the strongest constructs under the Heartlands--three should be sufficient. I desire samples for study but cannot spare minions for a raid.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: Clockwork will give me the box in exchange for antimagic plating from the strongest constructs under the Heartlands. Three samples should be enough for him to study.

Gather and give Clockwork:

  • Anti-Magic Plating x 3
Clockwork says, 'Excellent. Let me know when you're ready to get your box from Silver and I'll open a portal to him.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: I gave Clockwork what he wanted. In exchange, he will open a portal to Silver, where I'll be able to get the crate.
You say, 'What do you mean? I have to get it from Silver?'
Clockwork says, 'It's simple enough. Silver has your box. That portal will take you to him. He won't fight you for it, I'm sure, but as for the rest... you'll have to see for yourself.'
You say, 'I'm ready to get the crate from Silver.'
Clockwork opens the portal.
Note: Clockwork will open a Portal to Silver, hail it.
You say, 'Hail, Silver'
Only half the bones in the skeleton before you are made of marrow. The rest are polished metal, not a fleck of rust anywhere on them. Silver clacks its mouth idly. The metallic jaw makes an odd sound as it strikes the teeth together.
You say, 'Clockwork said you had the crate of Marks.'
Silver's head spins viper-fast to face you. 'He has? He has, he has...' The gleaming skull shakes forlornly. 'How soon it is then that the happy part of the tale will be all told up.'
You say, 'Uh, what?'
The metal skeleton laughs, slapping its knee. Small chips fly off as the metal hand strikes the bone kneecap.
You say, 'What tale do you mean?'
Silver tells you, 'The prisoner knows the sunset in the changing of the guard.'
You say, 'I have no idea what you mean.'
Silver waggles a gleaming claw at you, then uses it to push its own jaw shut.
You say, 'Do you have the crate or not?'
Silver says, 'Perhaps I do, perhaps I do. On which of my unnumbered pages did-will I write it on? If you are here, then perhaps so is your box, true. But how can you care, in a time like this?' The skeleton spreads its arms wide. Only the metal bones gleam in the factory light, lending the skeleton a half-formed appearance. 'Interesting times are upon us, all around. Gods and men are ready to die in service of each other. How can you watch the star when the sun is so bright in your eye?'
You say, 'Star? Sun? That's an interesting choice of a metaphor,'
Silver's jaw opens, but no sound comes out. After a moment, it shuts. The skeleton eventually breaks the silence with a titter. 'Perhaps you are right, perhaps you are right...'
You say, 'What's the sun--what's going to happen?'
Silver lowers to its haunches, then lays its hands delicately on the sides of your face. The metal is cold and lifeless, but the bone is strangely warm. He pulls you closer, whispering into your ear. 'It's not going to be ok this time.'
You say, 'Why wouldn't it be ok? What?'
He rests back, hands draped across his knees. 'The face in the sand watches us all.' He reaches out with one finger, touching you gently on the nose. 'Each and every one.'
You say, 'Can you find the box?'
Silver says, 'No, no, if I could, I think that I would, wouldn't I?' Silver shakes its head. 'I don't know, I don't know...'
You say, 'Well, can *I* find the box?'
Silver says, 'I sometimes can pick signals out of the noise, sometimes, not often. A flash of clarity: my hands hold the crate. My *real* hands, loud with blood, warm with life.' Around you, shades begin to appear. 'Long ago, from Before, when memory came one-at-a-time instead of loud-crashing-always. Your crate is among them, somewhere...'

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: I must search Silver's memories for the crate I need, then bring it back to Lyjan.

Eight a memory (The Rust  • Quest triggered) will spawn. Kill them until one drops Crate of Marks of the Vah.

Note: If you do not get a Crate of Marks of the Vah, hail Silver to respawn the a shadow of memory.

Return to Lyjan Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1280, 1270, -23  • Vah Rehn Camp)

Give Lyjan Vahl:

  • Crate of Marks of the Vah
Lyjan takes the crate from you. He traces his clawtips over the crate, eyes closed. 'This... this is very old, you understand, but not to me.' He grits his teeth and opens both the box and his eyes. The sight of dust-covered and rusted marks strikes him like a blow. Gingerly, he takes one of the marks in his hand. The amulet glows briefly as Lyjan blows the dust off it. The vah holds the mark close and, as you watch, begins to speak.
You say, '-Listen to him.-'
Lyjan Vahl says, 'Long ago, someone told you the story of a different place. The story of a city on stone, raised close to the stars, vast and wondrous.' The mark glows again. 'That place... is gone.' The light is instantly snuffed, but the mark doesn't stop darkening. It drinks in light from the surrounding area until Lyjan is cloaked in shadow. 'You are right in your anger, but that sun set long ago. We lost the place well before the lands of magic were rent asunder. Were it not now oblivion, it would be ruin.'
You say, '-Keep listening.-'
The shadow lightens a little, but only a little. As Lyjan continues, you get the impression he's telling the story to himself as much as to the mark. The news hurts them both. 'We lived in exile for generations, huddled and hunted in a dank cave outside Jayla's empty city. Turned away by her, kept from our former home, we had nowhere to go when the end came and few enough left to see it. All that we had is gone. This place,' he motions around him, holding the mark out, showing it the tents and refugees, 'is what's left. These Rehn, along with a handful of survivors, are all that remains. Scarce more than a hundred stars left in the sky.'
You say, '-Let him finish.-'
The shade flees from the mark. The metal lays inert in Lyjan's palm. He closes his fingers around it, claws digging into his palm. 'There's no time for mourning. Vah are still lost out there and they need to be shown the way. No grand cities, no art, no science or culture, tents only, yes. No future, no hope. A beaten people. But people still. Is it right that vah should die alone?' A hint of wavering light shows through the fur between Lyjan's fingers. 'If you and I and our oaths are all that's left, so be it. When we go, it will be as Vah *Shir*. Our people are here and our duty is here and we will serve both until we all pass and the sky is empty again.' The light steadies, pulses once, then fades. Lyjan turns to you and places it in your palm. 'It has been bound to this place. It will do its part as long as it is able.'

You receive Mark of the Vah from Lyjan Vahl.

You gain 75,000 experience!!

Your journal has been updated. [The Vah]

Journal Text: I recovered the crate for Lyjan. He is now able to supply me with working Marks of the Vah to give to the refugees I find. I should speak with Nevaldan to learn where I must search.
