Walkthrough

Find Yejhana Rehn (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1250, 1400, -23  • Vah Rehn camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Yejhana Rehn'
Yejhana flicks an ear at you. She seems to welcome your company.
You say, 'You seem to be getting along in the camp better now.'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'I suppose that I am, and I have you to thank for it.' Yejhana lifts a hand up and gently runs a finger down the side of your cheek. The touch is... uncomfortable, to say the least. 'I'm proud of you, you know. I hope you know that.'
You say, 'There's something different about the way you talk to me than you do to the others.'
Yejhana is taken aback. She blinks, seeming to really see you for the first time in a long while. 'Aye, there is.' She sighs. 'I find that it... helps... to consider you a pupil. If I let myself think that, in some small way it's as if I have my old life back. I get caught up in the process of teaching whatever it is you've asked about and I get lost in it. Perhaps not healthy, but it's the closest I've come to being... better... in many years.'
You say, 'Is something still bothering you?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'Isn't there always? I'm getting better now, better than I was, but I'm not the only vah here, <Player Name>. Look at what has happened to my people. Before, I had the knowledge that our cities were still out there, somewhere, even if this was my world. But they're gone, and have been for a long time. The last of the other vah died when the lands of magic did. The injustice done to me pales in comparison to the fate of my entire species.'
You say, 'What can you do about it?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'I'm not certain. I have no one to hate this time. I know not why our cities fell, nor do I know why the lands of magic were destroyed. I fear I need your help yet again, <Player Name>. Without a name, we have no closure. Without someone to revenge against, my people have no justice. Start your search in Sadri Malath. The taldorians survived the destruction of the lands of magic, so perhaps there will be clues there.' Yejhana flicks an ear at you. 'I know it will not be easy, but my people are almost dead. So much has happened to us, has been done to us. There will be many names to name. I ask only for one for now. One small part of the wrong against us, to keep me focused, to give me purpose. Find me something to hate, <Player Name>.'

Journal Text: Yejhana wants a focal point for her submerged grief over the plight of the vah. She said I should start my search in Sadri Malath, where the taldorians who survived the lands' of magic destruction live. I'm to look for evidence of collaboration. In her words, I am to find her something to hate.

Find Arch Theron Nika (Sadri Malath  at 112, 35, 22  • Paladin Guild) .

While searching Arch Theron Nika's room, you come across a pile of old missives. A quick search of them reveals instructions to specific taldorians, from Nika, on how best to prepare for the coming disaster. There are also strict directions to keep the work secret. Yejhana would very much like to hear this information.

Return to Yejhana Rehn (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1250, 1400, -23  • Vah Rehn camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Yejhana Rehn'
Yejhana flicks an ear at you. She seems to welcome your company.
You say, 'I've discovered evidence that Arch Theron Nika may have known about the catastrophe before it destroyed the lands of magic.'
Yejhana growls, long and low in her throat. 'You've done well, <Player Name>. Show me.'
You say, '-Show her the paper.-'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'The truth seems to be inescapable.' Yejhana's ears press flat back. 'Arch Theron Nika did not warn the vah refugees of the impending disaster. Because of his inaction, they--all of them--are dead. That crime is inexcusable, and Nika deserves death.'
You say, 'That paper doesn't prove that he even considered the vah, though. Can he be blamed for scrambling to save his own people, to the exclusion of all other concerns?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'Yes. The mountain of vah corpses provides more than enough blood to cover his hands. Mistake or not, many are dead because of him. Ask the traveler if you don't believe me.' Yejhana spits. 'That wench knows more than any of us. Ask her if he knew we were there. You know the answer she'll give.'
You say, 'How do you intend to proceed?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'The Theron is far too powerful and well-guarded to simply execute.' Yejhana scratches her chin. 'You got access to his room once. Perhaps you can do it again. We may have to poison him. However, I've never heard of a substance powerful enough to kill someone of his might. Neither would Ryhajin, and I think that he would object morally as well. Luckily for us, and unluckily for the Theron, the traveler mentioned to me that her knowledge does extend to the apothecary. That soulless, calculating cur will have no objection to helping us brew some, I think. We will have vengeance for the Theron's arrogance. I only wish that we didn't have to be so... circumspect.'

Journal Text: Yejhana wants me to poison Arch Theron Nika for his negligance  [sic] before the lands of magic were destroyed. She believes that the traveler will know how to make a poison powerful enough to kill a man of his stature and no moral objection to doing so.

Find a traveler (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at 1295, 1230, -22  • Vah Rehn camp) .

You say, 'Hail, a traveler'
a traveler says, 'You have done well, <Player Name>. The Vahir may not speak much, but they are grateful nonetheless--as am I, after a fashion.'
You say, 'Did Arch Theron Nika know that the vah were holed up in the caves when he learned of the lands' of magic imminent destruction?'
a traveler says, 'Yejhana sent you, didn't she?' The traveler sees your expression and nods. 'I thought as much. Your interactions with her have helped, but she remains troubled.'
You say, 'You didn't answer my question.'
a traveler says, 'Then I shall: Arch Theron Nika had full knowledge of the vah refugee camp in the caves.'
You say, 'What do you mean? It seemed like she just needed time.'
a traveler says, 'She has nothing left of herself. The life she used to have is gone from her. She believes she can never have it back, never be happy again. That she doesn't deserve it. Yejhana's whole purpose now, what little she has left of one, is to seek revenge for the things done to the vah. And, <Player Name>, if you want my advice--play along.'
You say, 'Play along? What do you mean?'
a traveler says, 'I must ask that you trust me on this, <Player Name>. I cannot say more.'
You say, 'What will you do when her search leads to you?'
The traveler shrugs. 'If she still wants justice, I will not stop her. If striking this avatar down will bring her some peace, she has earned it, and if it brings me some pain, then I, too, have earned it. I will still be able to help in any event.'
You say, 'Yejhana sent me. She would like your help in making a poison powerful enough to kill an Arch Theron.'
a traveler says, 'Theron Nika, I assume. She believes he let the vah die in the disaster, yes?'
You say, 'Yes. Will you help her?'
a traveler says, 'Yes.' Her answer is clear and without hesitation. You get the feeling that she anticipated the request. 'One's own hate is a very strong poison. The stronger the pain, the grief, the rage--the stronger the venom. It can be made physical. While she seeks revenge for the destruction of her people, the real source of her grief is the loss of her old life. Tell her to search for things that remind her of her exile, and most especially of her time in the Rehn camp.'

Journal Text: The traveler told me that intense hate can itself be used as a toxin, and suggested that Yejhana and I collect those things that most accutely  [sic] remind her of her time in the Rehn camp after being exiled from her home.

Return to Yejhana Rehn (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1250, 1400, -23  • Vah Rehn camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Yejhana Rehn'
Yejhana flicks an ear at you. She seems to welcome your company.
You say, 'The traveler told me that hate itself can be made physical and used as a vicious toxin. She wants us to collect things which remind you most of your time in the Rehn encampment, after being exiled.'
Yejhana nods, losing herself in memory. After a long moment, she speaks. 'Yes, I think I know a few things which we might use. Four, specifically'
You say, 'What's the first?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'My time in the camp... hmm...' Her eyes close. 'Kishar and I used to sit on the edge of Lake Tarhyl and watch the younger vah fish. The lake is much warmer now, but back then there were cold water elementals deep in the water. Fish hooked by the vah would swim down instinctively to flee the hook, and sometimes they went too deep.' Yejhana suppresses a titter. 'More often than not, the vah pulled up frozen blocks instead of fish. The memory is not particularly vivid, but we spent a lot of time there, just sitting and talking together. Perhaps a large number of smaller memories will work. A mass of frozen fish would be perfect for them.'
You say, 'What's the second?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'The day Ghare was born.' Yejhana looks down. 'It was a hard birth. The camp had no shaman. We had to make do with what we had on hand... One of the old warriors had a--a sort of poultice, almost. He wouldn't say where it was from, but he said it would help. It hurt more than anything I've ever felt in my entire life and they could hear my screams even at the base of the mountain, but it healed the tear in me and slowed the bleeding.' Yejhana shakes her head, a sad smile on her face. 'Kishar was threatening the warrior until he saw the midwife handing me Ghare. I'll never forget the look on his face--pain and joy, both at once. I'm told it mirrored my own.' Yejhana swallows. 'You should try to find more of the poultice, I think.'
You say, 'What's the third?'
Yejhana refuses to meet your gaze. 'Once, we had a... a fight.' She swallows. 'We fought often, mind you. Usually something I said to one of the other vah, or even to Kishar. Or, may the stars guide me, even to Ghare. But this... this was worse.' Yejhana holds out her hands, looking at them as if she doesn't recognize them. 'I struck Kishar, <Player Name>. We were yelling, he had lost patience with my... eccentricities... and in the middle of it I picked up an urn and I struck him across the mouth. Broke three teeth. There was blood everywhere. It looked much, much worse than it was, but it was bad enough. He dropped like an anchor. I realized what I'd done, but too late. Of course it was too late. It was *always* too late.' Yejhana growls and sobs at the same time. The sound is strange to your ears. 'I wanted to drop the pot but I had to set it down carefully--we didn't have another. I collapsed onto him and was still holding him, weeping and babbling apologies, when he finally woke.
You say, '-Let her continue the memory.-'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'I didn't speak to him again for four days. I couldn't even look him in the eye. He *forgave* me, you know.' She sniffs. 'As soon as it happened, even. Oh *gods*, <Player Name>, I didn't deserve that.' She sobs again, covering her eyes with a hand. '...I wish I could have been better to them, you know. They deserved more than me. I loved them in my own fashion, and they knew that, but I never told them just how...' Yejhana pauses, thinking of how to word it. '...how *important* they were. Kishar was the only good thing left of me and Ghare was what let me have hope that maybe someday I would be better. And now they're gone.' Yejhana waits a long moment, composing herself. 'The pot, <Player Name>. It was of orcish make. Coldstone, I believe. If you could find another, we could use it for this.'
You say, 'What's the fourth?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'Once, not long after Ghare had learned to walk, he woke up and snuck away from us while we were distracted.' Yejhana shakes her head. 'We panicked when we saw he was gone. He hadn't wandered far, but that didn't make him safe.' Yejhana growls. 'He was trapped under an overhang of rock. Just outside it was a huge, nasty puddle of blackness. A slime of some sort. We had no weapons, no training, but that didn't matter. I jumped at the slime, raking and biting it while Kishar stepped past and pulled Ghare to safety. The slime was too strong for me by half, but I managed to drive it off. It didn't want to work for its meal.' Yejhana hooks a link in her armor and tugs on it a bit. 'That's what convinced me to learn to wear this, and to wield a weapon. Once I recovered, that is.' She smiles wanly. 'The creature broke most of the bones in my right arm and infected me with some manner of plague. It took almost a year to make me well. ...if you could find some of a black slime, we could use it.'

Journal Text: Yejhana listed several things that could serve as focus points for her memory. A mass of frozen fish, a burning poultice, an orcish urn, and a measure of black slime. I should find these things and bring them to her.

Gather and give to Yejhana Rehn:

  • Mass of Frozen Fish
  • Burning Poultice
  • Orcish Urn
  • Measure of a Black Slime
Yejhana looks at the items you have gathered silently, overcome by the memories. She beckons to the traveler.

Journal Text: I gave Yejhana the items that remind her most strongly of her time in the Rehn camp. The traveler will be here shortly to make use of them.
Yejhana Rehn says, 'Here.' The black-furred vah gives the items to the traveler. 'These... bring up strong memories of that time, and strong emotions. Grief, loss, regret, but not hate.' Yejhana shakes her head. 'No, looking at these, remembering those times, it brings up no hate in me.'
A traveler says, 'I do not need your hate, Yejhana. What you describe is the source of it. Your grief, your loss, your regret: These are what fuel your anger.'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'You can work with them, then? Make them into a poison?'
A traveler says, 'They already are. But yes: I will make them into what you need.'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'I'm not sure what you--ff!' She rears back, interrupted by the traveler dumping the armload of items into the fire.
Thick wafts of black smoke lift from the fire. The traveler moves her arms and chants, trapping the smoke in a roiling cloud.
The smoke's color softens, turning first to gray, then to white. Yejhana watches in silence, curious but unwilling to risk interrupting the ritual.
An opening forms in the smoke, small but soon widening to take up most of the cloud. A grass-covered hill is visibile  [sic] in it, along with two vah--an adult and a child, standing near a grave marker.
Yejhana Rehn says, 'What... what *is* this?' She looks to the traveler, who looks back to the smoke. Yejhana leans forward, peering closer.
Yejhana Rehn says, 'That's Kishar and Ghare... I can hear them, now.' Faint voices are audible, Kishar's and Ghare's, speaking about Yejhana. She bites her lip, ears at half-mast. 'They... they were better off without me, I'm sure. I just wish I...' she sniffs, shaking her head.
Kishar's ears perk up. He looks about, searching for a moment. '...Yejhana?'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'They can *hear* me?' The traveler nods. Yejhana looks back into the smoke. 'Yes, it's me. I don't know how this...' She chokes on her words, sniffing and closing her eyes. When she speaks, her voice holds only a simple sincerity. 'I'm so sorry, Kishar. For the way I treated you, and Ghare, and the others. For everything.'
Kishar tries to speak, but Yejhana cuts him off. 'No, let me finish.' She looks directly into the smoke, making eye contact with Kishar. 'I've said that before, I know, and I meant it then, too, but I only knew that something was wrong with me. I was so selfesh  [sic], always worrying so much about my own problem... I was sick, *am* sick, but you were there for me in a way I was never there for you, and I regret that more than anything. More than the murder, more than losing my old life--more than *anything*.'
Yejhana Rehn says, 'I spent so much time weeping for my lost self, wishing I could have it back... but I *had* it back, didn't I? I had you and Ghare. You were so good to me, so patient.' She shakes her head. 'I didn't deserve any of it. I'll never know why you loved me so, but at least now you'll know it helped. More than helped--it was the only thing that kept me alive. I love you, Kishar. I always have. I just wish I'd been able to show it more.'
Kishar is quiet for a moment after Yejhana finishes speaking. He smiles sadly up at her through the smoke. 'I--' He's cut off when both him and Ghare vanish in a flash of bright light.
Yejhana blinks, startled, as the smoke rapidly dissipates. Then something at the edge of the camp catches her eye.
Yejhana Rehn says, 'This is... there's... ff!' She lunges at the traveler, hugging her tight, before turning to you. 'This is more than I could ever have hoped for. Be sure to speak with me again, but another day, I think.'
The traveler nods to you. 'What I could not do for Shaylan, I have done for Yejhana. Thank you for your help in this matter.'

Wait for the camp to reset.

You say, 'Hail, Yejhana Rehn'
Yejhana Rehn says, '<Player Name>, thank you.' She presses a piece of cloth into your hand. 'My old house banner. Along with the rock, it was the only thing I carried with me of my old life. Since you took the one, I'd like you to have the other. [sic]

Journal Text: The traveler used Yejhana's strong memories of Kishar and Ghare to pull them to present, in much the same way as she tried to do for Shan Nairu. This time, she was successful, and Yejhana seems truly happy for the first time since I've known her. At least in this case, it seems the traveler's meddling has done unmitigated good. Perhaps I was right to trust her.
