Find Brother Sortel (Dreadlands at 829, 9693, 1068 • Refuge) .
You say, 'Hail, Brother Sortel'
Brother Sortel says, 'Ah you've come at last. You may have impressed Kromtash, but you have a long way to go before you gain any real trust here. Running around, causing a ruckus in the death mines. My question is why?'
- [D1] - Neutral or No Shift?
- You say, 'I'm an emissary of sorts, from the old world, and I need to gain your trust.'MISSING TEXT
- [D2] - Good Shift?
- You say, 'It's the right thing to do. You guys seem like you need help.'Brother Sortel says, 'I don't believe it. Nobody does something for nothing. Nobody. An outsider cannot possibly understand where we come from, what we have lost.'
- [D3] - Evil (+2)
- You say, 'I'm no friend to Kaezul, and I imagine you people will reward me eventually.'Brother Sortel says, 'Always take, take, take from your kind. Outsiders don't understand our struggles, our sacrifices. Only your greed motivates you. It makes me sick.'
You say, 'Don't speak to me of loss. You can't know what destruction Kaezul brought to my homelands.'
Brother Sortel says, 'How DARE you! At least you have your freedom! What do we have? We live in CONSTANT fear. Fear that the Mist will consume us. Fear that the vast armies of Kaezul will descend upon us. Fear that he already knows where we are, and has infiltrated. We have lost so many, many of our friends... our families. We can't beat Kaezul, we just hope to live another day. And if things get bad, we have no place to run too. This is our last stand. You, at least, can flee.'
You say, 'The Mist? He uses it here as well?'
Brother Sortel says, 'I will NOT speak of that to you. Not yet and, perhaps, not ever.'
You say, 'I am here to help you. You can accept it, or not. One way or another I am going to end the Kaezulian threat for good.'
Brother Sortel says, 'As if it were that easy. How arrogant can one <Player Race> be! Let's say that you are strong enough to face down the Claws of Kaezul. Let's pretend you can single handedly sink the entire Kaezulian Armada. Let's say that you cannot be killed by his giants or his dragons. Let's imagine you can actually look Kersaz Ironscale in the face and tell him 'I've killed all of your troops, and now its your turn'. The Mist will still devour you. You can't stop it. It obeys Kaezul, and you can't stand up to it. No one can.'
You say, 'Who are all these groups you mention? And the Mist? What do you know of it?'
Brother Sortel says, 'I will NOT speak of that to you. Not yet and, perhaps, not ever.'
You say, 'Well... maybe I'd like to understand.'
Brother Sortel looks at you oddly. 'I... well... if you are serious, I have something in mind that could help. There is a monument in this valley. To a... friend of mine. Visit it and perhaps you'll begin to understand.'

Journal Text: This is going to be an uphill battle... Brother Sortel doesn't believe I understand what the rebellion is going through. He wishes for me to find a monument to a friend of his, and 'understand'. The monument should be in this valley somewhere.
Visit the monument and discovering its meaning. Location is 2495, 7725, 1050. The "Druid Rings".
You approach what at first appears to be a cracked druid circle. Upon closer inspection, you realize each crack is in fact, a name.

Journal Text: Are all those slaves who have died thus far? They have been fighting for a very long time indeed. I should report back to Brother Sortel.
Return to Brother Sortel (Dreadlands at 829, 9693, 1068 • Refuge) .
You say, 'Hail, Brother Sortel'
Brother Sortel says, 'His name was Ageki. He was just a citizen of Ikild. He had inherited his estate from his parents when they fled to the Old World, for he was loyal. He had many slaves as well. I was a second generation slave. I never had freedom, I didn't know better.'
You say, 'Did he help you escape? Why?'
Brother Sortel shakes his head. 'Not exactly or directly. Ageki got conscripted into the Kaezulian Armada, and sailed to Elael only knows where. He returned, very few do if you didn't know, and was changed.'
You say, 'He released you then?'
Brother Sortel sighs. 'Yes and no. I don't know what happened exactly. In the middle of the night he came into the slave quarters and unlocked our shackles. He said to us 'You have all served me well, some for your entire lives, and I need you now more than ever. But I won't make you come with me. If you are frightened, go find a new Master. If you don't fear death, come with me'. I was young, and he was my Master... what could I do but follow?'
You say, 'He was in trouble then? And needed your help to fight?'
Brother Sortel shrugs. 'I never knew for sure. He never told me. The short of it, is we ended up out here, only he and I left alive. The others fled at night, or were killed in ambushes. We were out of supplies and a Nazdrich attacked us. He saved me. He took the hit, killed the beast, and spent the next three days bleeding to death. Do you understand why he did all that <Player Name>?'
You say, 'No, I really don't.'
Brother Sortel nods. 'Neither do I. I've never been able to figure it out. It defies all logic. It just doesn't make any sense. None of it. I don't understand it. How can you understand our plight, when I can't even understand why some of our own sacrifice themselves?' Brother Sortel sighs again. 'Do you know the most important thing about that story?'
- You say, 'Is it that one should never judge a book by its cover?'Brother Sortel shakes his head. 'It is that not all the Iksar of Ikild are our enemies. <Player Name>, I still don't know if we should trust you... but we do need help, so I'm going to let people know that you are a friend. Please don't prove me wrong.'
- You say, 'Is it that one should never mess with a Nazdrich?'Brother Sortel shakes his head. 'It is that not all the Iksar of Ikild are our enemies. <Player Name>, I still don't know if we should trust you... but we do need help, so I'm going to let people know that you are a friend. Please don't prove me wrong.'
- You say, 'Is it that one never really understands the nature of another mortal fully?'Brother Sortel shakes his head. 'It is that not all the Iksar of Ikild are our enemies. <Player Name>, I still don't know if we should trust you... but we do need help, so I'm going to let people know that you are a friend. Please don't prove me wrong.'
You say, 'Thanks for the chance. What needs to be done?'
Brother Sortel nods. 'You may not realize it, but these Dreadlands are called such, for a reason. The conditions are harsh for those prepared for it, and many of we former slaves aren't. Those with the means and knowledge among us, are dubbed Caretakers, and try their best to keep us healthy. Unfortunately a recent epidemic of sorts has struck our valley, and many of us are sick. Many important duties are not being done, and worse many important supplies are not being gathered. Visit the Caretakers, and find out what they need most to get everyone else back up and working again. You will have the thanks of all of us if you do.'

Journal Text: Headway! I think... maybe. In any case I've been tasked with aiding the caretakers in whatever they need done. I'd best find them.
