The Solo Monk
While soloing is not for everyone, I started on SoD with a preference to play a single main. Not to mention that nothing beats safe AFK like whacking the FD hotkey.
Also being new to SoD, I had no ability to twink. This guide is to help offer suggestions on gear paths with simultaneous leveling options for others in a similar situation. While there are lots of places to xp solo and even more so while 2 boxing or grouped, this list focuses on gearing up with some attention paid to getting incidental cash drops. The levels indicated are solo, untwinked, unbuffed, so 2 boxers may find the camps doable at lower levels.
Please feel free to contribute (especially since my memory of the exact levels I attempted some of these camps is a little sketchy), fill-in details, or comment.
I took a break from SoD over most of 2008, but am semi-back. If you see me online, I welcome any questions, conversation, and yes, even occasional grouping while playing online: /tell Yopodo!
General Advice
- Use Intimidation. I keep it hotkeyed/chained with Disarm (to reduce mob damage output, where applicable) and dps/special attacks. Mobs have been re-coded not to run and instead, you can debuff them or even get a 3-tick 25% or 40% slow. Critical failure will result in mob getting a free attack, but you usually get a beneficial outcome.
- Use styles judiciously. Besides regular use of syles 1-3, /s 7, /s 10, /s 13, and /s 14 can be particularly useful in the right situations.

Edit: Tuek 2/20 I would include the other newbie armor quests for those who play humans Windwoven Armor Quests
Later Purchases
By the time you hit 60, you ought to have farmed/listsold enough to have made some purchases:
- Ciadrian Crystal or Cloak of Blind Rage for haste
- Damask Leather Sleeves
- Damask Leather Leggings
- Finely Crafted Wristband
- Hoop of the Kedge
- Failure Strand 101A
- Frostweaver's Cloak
- Earring of the Betrayer (possibly soloable - haven't tried) (Not possible at level 60 as the mob often procs a nasty lifetap DOT)
- Gathur's Doomscorn Bauble
- Grandmaster's Chest-Wraps of the Risen, Wildfire Robe, or Damask Leather Tunic (budget: Mummy Wrappings)
- Grandmaster's Hand-Wraps of the Risen
- Imp Hide Armor (if you really want to break out the cash)
Pay attention to the WTB tradeskill items. Towards 60 and up, you'll find yourself able to farm quite a few items that can easily bring in 200pp to 400pp a stack. In some cases, even while XPing (Tangleweed and Lava Dust for example).
Gearing Up While XPing!
Twinked or 2 boxers should be able to attempt these at lower levels. Noted levels were my attempts going untwinked (except for player crafted weapons as noted below).
Item | Zone(s) | Min Solo lvl | Notes |
newbie armor | Stinger's Bog, Halls of Mielech | 1 - 10 | Iksar Monk Four Elements Quests(Newbie Grobb) |
An Old Grub, Defender's Sash and Defender's Insignia | Mistwoods | 3 - 7 | Very easy quests to do at low levels, rewards are great and handing in Bag of Stolen Money from the bandits yields great experience at lower levels |
Mithril Knuckles | tradeskilled | any | Purchased for 20pp, 8/18 pri only, monk fists at 45 attain this ratio (purchased prior to BOE, not sure what current market bears) |
Tongu's Mittens | Southern Waste of Tarhyl | 10-15 | Mitts for +baking, this and other armadillo quest(see Southern Waste of Tarhyl: Quests) yields good xp |
Twirling Sandals, Hooked Trinket | Southern Waste of Tarhyl | 13-15 | No FD yet, bind in zone and eat a death to break the named camp |
collect Darksun Headbands | Southern Waste of Tarhyl | 10-15 | for turn-in for Amice of the Golden Dawn faction |
soft leather, idols for Erudin Symbol of Honor | Warrens | 15-22 | vendor drops from jailor/hunter (always pop), noble, king, and bouncer |
Fearful Eyepatch, Tempered Brass Knuckles, Gnollish Headwraps | Blackburrow | 17 | Brawler is soloable at 17, barely... tried camp on otherside of zoneline for Kreltar, he never popped |
Gemweave armor | The Runnyeye Citadel | ? | 0.1 wt, mixed semi-random stats on some pieces (The Runnyeye Citadel: NPC Loot), new zone in 2008 |
Commander's Sigil | Fearstone Keep | 19 | Need to do a 3-spawn split, most likely with casters, expect to die a lot from getting feared in this zone. Also drops a bard horn instrument (rare). |
Stamped Copper Band | around Centaur Hills | any w/invis | note you cannot pick up groundspawn items while in combat! ;) |
Warden's Coinpurse | Blackburrow | low-mid 20s | need detailed info on min non-twinked solo lvl (tough room - 4 wardens - barely duo'd with non-twink 20 monk/19 dru 2box) |
Newport Ring I | Northern Badlands | 24-25 | 3rd scout is most difficult, but at 25, it was -almost- trivial to solo (mobs were still dark/light blue, came in waves of two). Do NBL turn-ins from green/light blue mobs in NBL/WBL to Guardsman Scot for quick XP. Keep bandit heads for newport faction. |
Tribal Garments clickie/RARE, Goblin Chieftain's Earring Uncommon | Goblinskull Mountains | 26-28 | Breaking this 4-spawn camp is tough at 25-26 (all will aggro). Easier at 27. Easy at 28 (start to get green mobs). Goblin Drum is common drop, but is non-lore and vendors for 12pp, more to players on listsold. Named tends to pop 3-4 times in a row, then PHs in a row. |
Furred Leather Belt, Piranha Tooth Necklace | Blackburrow | need min solo level, 26-28 | Only thing to contend with is the perma-camping of these named mobs. |
Ghostmetal Knuckles | tradeskilled | 30 | lifetap is 46-50 pt proc/heal with -200 resist adjust! purchased for 115pp |
Newport Ring II | Eastern Badlands | 31 | Was relatively easy at 31. The brothers conned dark blue at this level. Might be doable at less than 31. Toughest part is white/yellow con wandering adds. |
Newport Ring III | Southern Badlands and groundspawns in Keep of Mielech | 31 | Corrupted centaur camp in NE zone is easiest for armor cache, straight melee. Save/bank extra rations from liodreth, 0.1 wt food! Save paws for turn-in and malts (100pp per stack) for listsold. Save all liodreth heads for Amulet of Newport faction tokens. Decent cash/mid-gem drops. Also pick up occasional silk armor. Use invis for groundspawns in Mielb, not possible to solo fight these mobs at this level. Collect an extra piece for the MQ3 seeker faction subquest (below). |
Quickshot Shortbow for cash | Southern Badlands | 34-35 | Cash vendor/listsold drops (bow listsolds for 70-100pp), really just a target of opportunity as he's a pita to spawn. Ranger might be hunting for him for quest piece (Ulidrak's Mane), so be nice and check /who before you engage Ulidrak. |
Vulfwere Fur Sleeves, Vulfwere Fur Belt, Blightmetal Charm | Sundered Mountains | Need min solo lvl | Was trivial at 30ish to kill these two named while completing (also trivial at this level) blightmetal quest. Watch out for sow-speed yeti! |
Illuminated Talisman | Warpstone Caverns | Need min solo lvl | Would be tough camp to break with casters/healers and lots of wandering mobs. I got this drop while heading through zone entry to cecuvian area so mobs were green. Ancient named was light blue to low/mid-30s. Two other named for cash drops while passing through to cecuvians. |
Fistwraps of the Flame, Headband of Visions | various | 35 | Monk Starfall. Other parts can be completed earlier than 35, but cyclops, fire giant and seer were only possible towards 34-35 (/s 10 was helpful with seer). Note: fire dmg on gloves only works for bare fists. |
Decanter of the Brave | Valley of Erimal | part of MQ | Collection quest is trivial to do in 30s. You can complete most of this at low levels as you go through other zones. Decanter is a nice back-up to /s 10 when fighting fear-casting mobs (e.g., enchanters in Lair of Paw). |
Skulker's Armor, Wyvernfang Leather Rewards | Northern Badlands, Warpstone Caverns | low 30s | Griffons and Cecuvian Lurkers/Prowlers for wyvern quest armor pieces. Bounties for Dulak was nixed, so cecuvian wings are now vendor trash. Cecuvians rare-drop amber/quartz level gems and skulker's armor, Griffons drop feathers (5pp) and claws. If you don't have see invis, notice that the game will autotarget any mobs that hit you so you can hit them back even if you can't see them ;-) Note, however, that invis'd Lurkers will autotargeted ONLY if you do not have yourself targeted when they hit you. They stay invis for pretty long durations, including during combat. |
0.1 wt food, newport faction tokens | Lair of Paw | need min solo lvl | Zone entry is blue/light blue in low 30s, good solo xp, though Trickster's still dangerous. Learn to love /s 10 at lvl 35 and use decanter as back-up. |
Dagger of Protective Illusions clickie/semi rare, heads for newport tokens | Lair of Paw | Need min solo lvl 40? | East/Southeast sector of zone in lower level is guards and beguilers. Artisian and Illusionist pop here (light blue to 50), though are tough splits until beguilers go green. Good cash drops from named. Progress to swiftpaws in NE corner of zone... no enchanters in that area. Good xp all the way to 55-56 if you can stomach it. At that point, you can clear PHs for Spy, Mind Claw, Artisian, Illusionist and Supplier. Assassin camp and Thought Mages too tough to split (well, splittable, but plan on dieing) even in upper 50s. |
Flanel Blanket | Great Divide | 50 | Even at 50, need to FD off mob, bind up, reengage multiple times. Huge penalty assist, but you can get your drops. |
Newport Ring IV | King's Pass | GROUP | did not attempt solo, frequent waves of 2-3 mobs, dark blue to 55 |
Seeker Apprentice Satchel | Valley of Erimal | 50ish | Finally soloable! Ghosts are mages and wizards... first pair is splittable if you are careful to time when they cast and rebuff themselves. Mages will rain, so watch your position and avoid the second two waves. |
Sandals of the Pariah for Sandals of Discord | Keep of Mielech | 50 | nice xp, best bang for the solo buck at this level range. Master Grakli cannot be solo'd for quite a few more lvls (til approx upper 50s). 44 shm/47monk took out Master Grakli |
Dimensional Focus for Razor Spine Pouch | Greenmist Jungle | 53 | For Razor Spine Pouch Monk Thurg quest. FD whenever their psionic stun proc lands (they proc nearly non-stop). Take a huge assist penalty, but possible to kill em at this level without having to completely memblur and bind wound. Possible to do Razorfang Pirahna in neighboring Yaralith the same way, but with binding in-between. Slow going, plus huge assist penalty, but you'll get your drop. The Eye of Yaralith and Watcher of the Eye are good targets of opportunity for cash drops on the way to the piranha pool. |
more newport tokens (of course!), clicky dagger camp (trivial), cash drops | Lair of Paw | 50 | non-stop xp action in light-blue Swiftpaw area. No casters back here. Mind Claw (only caster in area, coercer is PH) and Spy spawn in northeast two rooms off same forked hallway. |
Amice of the Golden Dawn | Northern Wastes of Tarhyl | 60 | Darksun Master Headband. Middle-camp and northern camps are easy to break (northern camp requires some thought in how to pull to minimize aggro radius and have double splits only). Seer/champion pairs trivial to split. Note: if you are planning to do this quest, you might want to grab the shards while your in the various zones. Nothing like waiting on a 3-5 hour respawn after you've finally garnered ally faction. |
Essence of Disruption for Sandals of Discord | Lake Starfall | 60-61 | a tomb guardian is reasonably soloable with /s 3 and /s 7 at this level. FD when they proc their slow, take the xp assistance hit. If needed let them reset and bind up as their regen is slow. The groundspawn in Sorcerer's Labyrinth is in in the area behind the hidden wall... take the ramps up, follow the one the doubles back over the zone-in area, careful of the ice, it'll make you slide right off the point of no-return! |
