A Dwarf In Freeport
'Korgen Stoutaxe says,' Welcome to our little refuge, friend. My companions and I were among the first to set foot on these lands, before the Silver Crown secured this part of the lane. We fought the corruption, and now we help the traders protect the ship route between here and Faydwer. You can rest and recover in the Seafarer's Inn, and there are Guides to aid you get through the city in one piece.
'Korgen Stoutaxe says,' Aye. Freeport is a city o' the dead. Has been since Kaezul came. Some hundred years ago, about. Freeport was a thriving city back then, the heart of the Wold World. It was, however, ruled by fools. Folls that thought they would be spared if they made nice and let the Iksar armies march through their city. Heh. They marched through it alright. Killed just about everyone, on the very anniversary of the cit;s founding, and reanimated the corpses to boot. These docks here used to be full o fhte walking deaders, until we cleared them.
You have learned about the fall of Freeport.
A Plague Wracked Survivor
'Leader Dannisin says,' 'Hail, traveler, and welcome to our camp. We call ourselves the Survivors, those who have not succumbed entirely to the plague that holds this once blossoming land in its grip. Though it may have rotted our bodies away, our minds remain sound, and from here we watch over the poor tormented creatures that live in this land and seek a way to end the plague. Feel free to share our shelter. Meskin over there can provide you with provisions if you need.'
'Leader Dannisin says,' 'These lands were not always like this. They survived even the Fall, and many of those who escaped the destruction of Freeport hid here. It was... I think, some sixty years ago. It is hard to remember. At first, a few animals got sick. They grew to unproportional sizes. Had strange blotches grow on their skin. Became aggressive. Strangest of all, they stopped aging. Then... there wasn't that many of us in the first place, and we continued to hunt the animals, even though they were diseased.. What else could we do? All other places were death. I think that's how it spread to us.'
You have learned the history of the Plaugelands.
An Old Elven Knight
'Sedran Telvir says,' 'I'm noone of interest to you, I am sure. Just an old man, swimming in memories.'
'Sedran Telvir says,' 'I have seen many years come and go, and have lived long even by elven standards. I have memories enough for a volume of books, but the one I am reminiscing now, the one that stands out strongest, is the invasion of the New World.'
'Sedran Telvir says,' 'Oh, yes. It happened right here, you know. Right at these very docks, in the year of 92 before the Fall. Kaladim, the Elven cities... they were all full of life back then. Two months before we had seen our young men board th ships of the Dwarven and Elven Alliance's war fleet. Twenty proud ships, loaded with men and magic. They set out from this harbor to meet the Iksar fleets and throw them back. Well, so we thought. In reality, they never ad a chance. Not one of our young men and women who crewed those ships survived the Battle of the Bloody Waters, and we never had a warning until black sales appeared on the horizon. Someone, I think it was one o the Dwarven nobles, understood what was happening. He got most of those who could not fight out of here, I was among the last to leave, and as I did, I saw with my own eyes the invaders.'
You have learned of the invasion of the New World.
A High Seer Of The Dawn Tribe
'Dawn Seer Tarnok says,' 'Greetings, out-triber. I am Tamok, Seer of the Dawn Tribe. I am the tribe's spiritual guide, the interpreter of the Word of Elael, a tradition that goes back to our old homelands.'
'Dawn Seer Tarnok says,' 'You did not always think that we have lived in this forsaken desert, did you? Once, the Dawn Tribe was great, and ruled the forests far across the sea. Our Chieftains lived in a stone tower in the midst of the Cauldron of Dawn, the blessed lake where the Dawn Stone fell. There was no Darksun Tribe then, for they were part of us, and we lived in peace and prosperity. This was until the Shadow that Consumes All came.'
The Captain Of The Thurgadin Guard
'Captain Nolgon says,' 'Greetings to you, High Elf. It is no often we see strangers these days. Not at all like it was during the time of refugees.
'Captain Nolgon says,' 'Huh. Don't you people have books? Scant years ago, at th time of the Fall, our king Dalak Shawdowhand struck a pact with group of Dark Elves, Ogres, Trolls and Iksar fleeing the razing o the Old World. In exchange for offering them shelter and homes, they would offer us much-needed helping hands to pacify the surrounding regions and keep the Stormhammers and Scale Alliance from letting their war spill over into our territory. It's no exaggeration to say that Thurgadin's population tendoubled over a month. I almost miss those times, there was always work to be done for a Captain like me. Har. Still, the pact did its job. The Divide's a quiet place now, and the war is well-contained to where the Dragons and Giants can happily slaughter each other out of my face. No more refugees these days, not.
'Captain Nolgon says,' 'Didn't you figure this out already? For whatever reason, Kaezul ceased his probes and attempts to push up through the North and hunt down the rest of the refugees, and even withdrew his armies from the Old World. People began talking of returning, and eventually some sort of alliance between important racial leaders from Erudin - that's the place where all the other refugees went - called the Silver Crown or something like that won over a lot of the people here. Thought they wanted everyone to settle in this new big city they were building called Newport or some such. Didn't happen that way. Everyone here went back to their ancestral lands. I've heard there was some schism among them afterwards tat spawned some new movement, the Blackscale or whatever. I can't say I care much. Any affairs that take place south of the Faentharc aren't my affairs. Thats for certain. You have learned of the time of refugees within Thurgadin.
A Dwarf In Erudin
'Trainer Bindle says,' 'Well, greetings lad. Unless you by some strange chance is happeing y for a few lessons on the ways of a Fighter, I dun think there be much I can do for ye. I suppose I should've moved wih the others, but I didn't have the heart in me to leave this place, especially now with all me trainees gron up, too. Ye look like the traveling lot.. if ye run into Emil, Tonis, Sham or Garble, tell em I says hi, aye?'
'Trainer Bindle says,' 'Ye don't know? Well... it be a long story. I can tell it, if ye want to hear it, but get me a mug of ale for e parchy throat.'
Gather and give Mug of Ale to Trainer Bindle.
'Trainer Bindle says,' 'Aye, a rumor o' an island, a previously unknown island off the east coast, with a city of strange robe-wearin' mn who casted spells an' tricks left an' right. Many didn't believe it, an' stayed in teh camps. You can see their unquiet corpses wanderin' th Badlands at night, I hear. Others, like m, built boats, hoped. Some o' the ships were lost at sea, but we found the island, and the Erudites. Hearin' our plight, they agreed ta take us in, an' cast some big spell that created a great storm around their island. So the ships o' Kaezul couldn't follow ya? That's how most of the remainders of the races came to live here in Erudin. Not all 'course. The Greatkin, those ratty Dark Elves, an' some Iksar that apparently didn't like bein' ruled by Kaezul, can't say I blame 'em, went up and hid in the blasted ice wastes o' the North. Thats how it went for some forty years, until the Return.'
A Historian Telling of Kings Pass
'Historian Allen says,' 'Hello, traveler. The pass beyond his Small canyon is one marked with an undying history. It is why I am here... the tale of battle must live on.'
'Historian Allen says,' 'It was a remarkable battle the forces o High Keep holding strong due to their magical superiority - even though overwhelming odds, outnumbered and outmatched physically on the battlefield. Lord Eldenal, High King of the Old World continued to push his men, striving to never give in to the onslaught of the dark elven and Iksar armies. Kaezul's might - through the hand of Baldokos the Betrayer - was neverending. The battle raged on for years until that fateful night.'
A Theron Of Lore
'Theron Praknat says,' 'Hail, young one. I am Praknat, the Theron of Lore. Was there something you wished of me?'
'Theron Praknat says,' 'You have come to listen to the history of our race? Surprising to find a young, spirited one interested in such things, but bid me continue, and I shall.'
'Theron Praknat says,' 'While of course I cannot tell our entire history... it is said that we were once as the Small frogs you might find in a pond or stream. Mindless. Animal. But then, the Master found us. He reshaped us into what we are now, gave us minds to reason with, arms to operate tools, voices to speak. He crafted for us our once-great city, Taldor Malath, and from his fortress of Faski Malath, he watched over us as he watched over all his creations, and all his lands.'
'Theron Praknat says,' 'Taldor Malath, Twilight Sea, the Nexus, the Valley of Spirits... the lands of the Master, our world, stretched far and wide, as varied as the creatures that inhabited it. Once, they were peaceful and blissful, as the races worked together under the watchful eye of the Master, but at the very height of his power, the Master was overthrown by his own favored children, the Akheva. His lands fell into ruin, and the races battled each other across the realm as we, the last protectors of his dream, the last loyal children, were all that stood between the greater shadow falling over us.'
'Theron Praknat says,' 'The Akheva were powerful, pale-skinned and tall four-armed creatures. They were vicious fighters and adept mages, but their true danger was in their ability to subvert and empower other races, giving them innumerable and varied soldiers to carry our their wars. But months ago, they broke through the magical seal that the Master placed on Faski Malath, the Fortress of the Master and home of the Akheva, just before he fell. Remember the Akheva, young one, for they are who we have prepared for, who we have honed our martial skills for, who we have practiced the Art to battle. Against their innumerable armies, against the sorcery of the Eternal Empress, we cannot hope to prevail. And yet we must. For there is noone else to stand against them.'
'Theron Praknat says,' 'While the Lands of Magic are no more, it is possible that the Akheva have escaped much like our people. You must be ever watchful, for they are a greater danger than you could imagine. Perhaps they continue to follow us, even in our new home, out of the jealousy for the attention the Master has given to us.'
'Theron Praknat says,' 'Yes, this hovel has been carved by our people in the image of Malath himself. We call it Sadri Malath - meaning New Malath. Taldor Malath is of the past now.'
