The fluffy orange kitten on item pages is a vivid, graphical reminder that those items are using a deprecated template which needs to be updated. The kitten is shown in place of the item image - it is intentionally obnoxious, to help spur people into updating the template. The missing image tag shouldn't be used on these pages, unless the image = parameter is missing or empty.
