Tomes
Tomes has been archived because it contains information about a system which is no longer available in-game. Please do not remove this tag unless this content is rereleased. |
Formerly, Tomes could be thought of as Alternate Advancement part 2. Due to client restrictions, new AA's could not be added to Shards of Dalaya, and Tomes were the solution to this.
Such client restrictions no longer exist. As such, all tomes were moved back to AAs in August 2020.
Various tomes exist in the game, be they store bought, quested, or dropped. Tome itself is a blanket term, and 'tome' items aren't necessarily called Tomes at all. A Tome must be 'filled' with exp to get its benefit. This is done by right clicking the Tome to read it (Note: All droppable current tomes must be translated by Apprentice Vaceth in Erimal before they can be activated). Any prerequisites or limitations are written within. If you are eligible to use the tome you will receive a message telling you so, and from then on your normal exp bar represents the earned tome experience. For some tomes, the benefit will be gained as you earn experience, for others you will receive no benefit until you level it up completely.
When it is filled it can be disposed of, you do not need to hold on to it any more. A tome is filled when right clicking on it brings up the message "You have learned all you can from this codex." Only one tome can be 'active' at a time, but there is no penalty for switching which tome is active ahead of time. The amount of exp you had in the previous tome is saved, and you can continue right where you left off. The amount of exp a tome needs tends to be measured in equivalent AA levels, and the amount needed vary greatly from tome to tome.
There is no limit to the number of tomes which can be learned. It is safe to switch tomes mid-way, and safe to switch back without losing any progress. A tome may be moved around within a bag without deactivating it. However, if the bag containing the tome is moved in inventory it becomes inactive. Any experience gained will be lost unless the tome is reactivated, another tome is activated, or experience is moved to AAs.
The formerly most common Tome by far, the Codex of Power, can no longer be bought in Erimal library. They once cost about 1.7k per volume, with 5 volumes total. To use them, you needed 250+ AAs to begin with. Each volume of the codex of power required 110 AAs to complete (The 200 AA myth). Codexes of Power have been removed from the game. If you have not already, please see Avilus the Librarian to refund you of your experience and platinum spent on them.
See how to use Tomes in Character Comparisons here.
Warning: Moving a tome or a container holding one may deactivate that tome. Take care to reactivate the tome if this should happen to you; otherwise, any experience you gain from then on will be for naught until you realize your error! |

Ikisith Tomes
In order to begin using any droppable tome from Ikisith, you must hand it in to Apprentice Vaceth (Valley of Erimal at 1151, 860, -42 • Palace library - first floor) to be translated (much like Ancient Spell Scrolls and Eldritch Spell Scrolls). There is a translation fee of 500 for level 1 general tomes, 1200 for level 2 general tomes, 2000 for level 3 general tomes, 1000 for level 1 class tomes, and 2000 for level 2 class tomes. Tomes become no drop after they are translated. This can not be undone.

In general, class tome 1s drop similarly to general tome 2s from difficult named group experience dungeon mobs in Ikisith, and they are available for token purchase from Logistician Zi`zi. Class tome 2s are known to drop from Claw Commander Era`velu, Supreme Ritualist Ofgats, Stranded Shadow Dwarf, Calyth, Queen of Fourstones and in The Abyss. It is believed that all class tomes require 80 AAs to complete.
