Find Yekla the Unhinged (Rivervale at 260 , -660 • Small cave in the north east of the zone)
You say, "Hail, Yekla the Unhinged."
Yekla the Unhinged says, "Ahh! Oh... I.. you're not one of them."
You say, "Who"
Yekla the Unhinged says, "In- in the river. I saw [shadows in the river]... I want to tell the Captain I saw shadows in the river... but but I don't dare... he... no... they... they..."
You say, "shadows in the river"
Yekla the Unhinged says, "No!No!"
Find Captain Algo (Rivervale at 232, -315, 3 • Near a lake, standing behind a tree) .
You say, "Hail, Captain Algo"
Captain Algo says, "Greetings. I am Captain Algo of the Vale Defenders. Can I help you?"
You say, "Yekla saw shadows in the river."
Captain Algo sighs, "Now what about her?"
Captain Algo says, "Yekla always sees things, be it the shadows in the river or evil eyes in her daily milk rations... look, I'm overburdened here, arranging the security of the Vale. There is an enemy army at our footstep and the people are disappearing right here in the very Vale. I don't have time with her ramblings."
You say, "They are? What's going on?
Captain Algo says, "Aye, travelers just moving through the city, mainly... here one morning, simply gone the next, but also a few of the citizens. It's puzzling, and quite a few of the townsfolk are stirred and troubled over it. I've been meaning to talk to Fella, the Innkeep, and hear if she's seen anything... but my duties keep me constantly tied up. Hmm... would you like to help me out, perhaps?
You say, "Sure, I can help out"
Captain Algo says, "Oh, very good. Just go ask Fella if she's [seen anything strange]... And if it yields anything, bring it back, hm?
Find Innkeeper Fella (Rivervale at 159, -42 •) .
You say, "Hail, Innkeeper Fella."
Innkeeper Fella says, "Welcome to the Weary Foot... do you wish to rest?"
You say, "Have you seen anything strange?"
Innkeeper Fella says, 'Oh... yes... there is something strange... downstairs. You should go take a look.'
Go into the basement and a hiding shadow will attack.
Kill a hiding shadow and loot Rusty Key.
Note: Only the person who loots the key from the hiding shadow can get the Vale Guardian's Amulet; the entire quest will have to be done over the following night for each person who wants it.
Give Rusty Key to Innkeeper Fella.
Innkeeper Fella says, 'Hss... I'll not allow you... I won't be cold again... I yearn... WE YEARN!'
Innkeeper Fella attacks. Kill her and loot Rusty Key and Scribbled Note.
Give Rusty Key and Scribbled Note to Captain Algo.
Captain Algo says, 'This is... this is terrible. You're saying she was harboring such a foul creature, one of the enemy...? And this key, it goes to the River Gate. It must mean that Yekla was right. They have collaborating allies here, in my city. This was written by a halfling hand, I assure you, likely the leader of these foul traitors. I must see to securing the River Gate, if they are planning to infilitrate us that way. You... can you take this note to Fendra, the City Scribe? She might have an idea who wrote it.'
You receive Scribbled Note from Captain Algo.
Give Scribbled Note to Fendra the Scribe (Rivervale • She's in the house to the south closest to the Jeweler.) .
Fendra the Scribe says, 'Eh? Oh, I see. Oh dear, that's terrible... please let me copy this quickly and I'll analyze it.'
You receive Scribbled Note from Fendra the Scribe.
Fendra the Scribe says, 'Mm-hmm... yes...'
Fendra the Scribe says, 'Oh... oh no. This is... this is... I can't beli-'
Fendra the Scribe says, '-arugh...!'
Fendra the Scribe died.
Three a murdering shadows will spawn. Kill them all.
Note: They can not be ignored.
You receive Scribbled Note directly into your inventory.
Give Scribbled Note to Captain Algo.
Captain Algo says, 'This is terrible news. Murdered in such a fashion... and without her, we have no hope of uncovering the author of the note. I- I will proceed with what investigations I can, but I have a defense to prepare... I thank you for your efforts, but there is nothing further you can do. Please take this, though, as a token of your service to us.'
Ned Timsis says, 'Psst... over here. You, the great Guardian... with that shiny new amulet.'
You receive Vale Guardian's Amulet from Captain Algo.
You gain 5000 experience!!
Note: It is suggested that, once this quest is complete, you do the next quest at least to (and including) the part with Commander of Rivervale, as this will flag your characters for the final two encounters.
