Journal Text: As he died Zurkiz handed me this scroll. I should probably take it back to Vrik.

Find Vrik the Sly (The Emerald Jungle at ?  • Razadian Camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Vrik the Sly'
Vrik the Sly says, 'Welcome back <Player Name>, what of my stranded agent?'
You say, 'Explain to Vrik about the attack by the mercenaries and the note that Zurkiz gave them.'
Vrik the Sly says, 'I suppose, we'll start with the scroll. Hand it here.'

Give Vrik the Sly:

  • Runed Scroll
Vrik stares blankly at the scroll. After a moment he turns it over looking for something more on the backside; then he shrugs.

Vrik the Sly returned Runed Scroll to you.

You say, 'Anything else you can see from it?'
Vrik the Sly says, 'This is a language I don't even recognize. How strange. Zurkiz was supposed to be strictly on an information gathering mission. Why on earth would he go through all that trouble to steal a scroll in a language he couldn’t even read?'
You say, 'That is strange, got any bright ideas?'
Vrik the Sly says, 'I imagine this must’ve been important to something he saw or heard there. All I can tell you about this language is that it’s older than I’ve seen anything before. And I can speak and read draconic. I’ve heard rumors of a gnome who’s researching dead languages. I’d probably start there'

Journal Text: Vrik has suggested I find the gnomish scholar who is studying dead languages.

Find Language Master Kabouter (The Grand Library  at -466, 409, 3  • Main lorekeeper area) .

You say, 'Hail, Language Master Kabouter'
Language Master Kabouter says, 'Can't you see that I'm busy? I don't have time to translate any more Elvish smut.'
You say, 'Who said anything about Elvish smut? I have a scroll written in an ancient language that even a master of dozens of languages couldn't understand.'
Language Master Kabouter turns to look at you. When he does you see the annoyed look plastered across his face.
Language Master Kabouter says, 'A scroll written in an ancient language that someone stupider than me couldn't understand? Oh gee you don't say. Listen here I can't just be translating everything for everyone who comes waltzing in the doors asking me to do it; life's short and I've got a lot I want to accomplish.'
[D1] Evil
You say, 'Listen here you self-absorbed twit. Translate the scroll or your life's accomplishments end here.'
Language Master Kabouter says, 'If adventurers are going to keep coming in here and threatening me I'm going to have to hire a bodyguard.'
Language Master Kabouter says, 'Fine, give it here I'll translate it.'
[D2] Good?
You say, 'I understand you're busy and there's much to be done here. But by translating this scroll you'd be helping a group of refugees in desperate need and you'd get to show off your superior capabilities.'
Language Master Kabouter says, 'Flattering my ego? Maybe you aren't just a stupid adventurer. Fine, fine, give it here.'

Give Language Master Kabouter:

  • Runed Scroll
Language Master Kabouter studies the scroll for a few minutes looking puzzled. He blurts out a loud 'Ah hah!' then looks back at you with a grin on his face.
Language Master Kabouter says, 'So this scroll is written in Ancient Ikildian. But not bog standard ancient Ikildian, which is what made it difficult to get a handle on. Many high-ranking Officials in Ancient Ikild would write their correspondence in code to hide details from the prying eyes of the Triumvirate. The sender and the recipient would both have tools that could be used to decipher it. With that I could translate it. All I can tell you without the decoder is it was addressed to 'Overseer Sazer, Forest Quarrymaster' and it's signed by 'High Councillor Zimel', Master of Spells, Ikild. No idea about the Quarrymaster but you might be able to find something about the councillor in Old Ikild.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Runed Scroll]

Journal Text: I found Language Master Kabouter and showed him the scroll. He told me he needs a decoder to translate most of it, and I should look around Old Ikild to try to find one.

Gather and give Language Master Kabouter:

  • decoder key
Language Master Kabouter says, 'Ah hah! On a hunch I spoke to a few colleagues. One of them recognized the ink used on the scroll was made from a rare pigment that was only commonly used around 5000 BF, during the last stages of the Ikildian Empire. Few documents from this era exist as most of them were destroyed during the natural disasters and ensuing revolts. This document could be of great historic significance!'
You say, 'Can you get on with it?'
Language Master Kabouter says, 'Sorry I tend to bloviate when I get excited. I'll decode it now.'
Language Master Kabouter sets to work decoding the scroll.
You see him holding up the decoder and sliding the wheels around
After a few minutes he begins writing on a piece of parchment. A few moments later he puts his quill down and turns to you.
You say, 'Hail, Language Master Kabouter'
Language Master Kabouter says, 'The note is a letter written by the master of spells in Old Ikild. He was researching a new magical substance called Ikildium which he believed could be used to make new potent magical goods. He was requesting large quantities of it from this Overseer Sazer fellow for his research.'

You receive translated ikildian scroll.

Your journal has been updated. [The Runed Scroll]

Journal Text: Kabouter translated the note. I should take it back to Vrik and see what he wants to do with it.

Return to Vrik the Sly (The Emerald Jungle at ?  • Razadian Camp) .

You say, 'Hail, Vrik the Sly'
Vrik the Sly says, 'What have you learned of the scroll, <Player Name>?'

Give Vrik the Sly:

  • translated ikildian scroll
Vrik the Sly says, 'This is quite intriguing. I'm surprised we've never heard of this Ikildium. If what this note says is true I want to find this mine before the Ikildians do. Not only could them having access to it be bad for us, but if we can find it first we may be able to create new weapons to use against them. Talk to Scout Azzyk in the Forest of the Fallen; his men have been mapping out the far reaches of the continent the last few months, and he may have a lead on where to find this missing mine.'
