Find Lorekeeper Firinis (The Grand Library at 151, -158, 6 • Senior Lorekeeper area - Voice of Jayla must port you) .
You say, 'Hail, Lorekeeper Firinis'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Well hello there, <Player Name>. I have heard many great things about you from the Voice. I hope that they are all true, for I do not like to have my work interrupted by those that are of no help.'
You say, 'What can I do to help?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'I have a working theory you can help me to test out. I do not want to cloud or skew your neutrality towards it by telling you about it just yet. I would like an outside mind to weigh in on it. I am missing one last piece that I believe will make the connection for me and prove my theory right.'
You say, 'What piece is this?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'I'm not even sure that such a piece exists, <Player Name>. I can only hope. Travel to Freeport and look for this piece for me.'
You say, 'Uhh, how will I know I have found it if you don't tell me anything about it?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Hmm? Oh, yes I could see how that would be a problem for you. My theory hinges on you finding me the remains of a journal I believe to be almost 2500 years old. It will likely be among the magic users still left roaming the city in their undead state.'
Give Tattered Remains of a Journal to Lorekeeper Firinis.
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Unbelievable. Oh I am so close, I can taste it!'
You gain 50000 experience!!
You say, 'What are you close to?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Shhh, I can't tell you that yet, <Player Name>. I don't want to ruin your open-mindedness. This theory may very well be the key to understanding the Scattering! Oh, I've said too much!'
You say, 'Well, if you won't tell me what your theory is, could you at least tell me why that journal was so important?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'This journal was written by the son of an extremely powerful magician around the year 2300 B.F. You will note that this was also the timeframe in which the coup to overthrow the monarchy failed. Those not executed escaped to Erudin, but that isn't what is important. The important part comes from what happened after the coup.'
You say, 'What happened 2500 years ago that is so important today?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'You would really ask that question here, among the Lorekeepers? Are you really that dense? Whatever, it matters not. I want you to return to Freeport, but this time I want you to seek out the empty, hidden places of the city. If I'm right, you will find something, or someone, that will help me piece this puzzle together even more.'
Head to the back of the bank vault in North Freeport.
- Ghost of Girian (North Freeport • Bank Vault) is a triggered spawn.
You say, 'Hail, Ghost of Girian'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Wha...Wh...Who are you?'
You say, 'Did you have a son?'
Ghost of Girian lowers his head. 'It has been so long. So long...'
You say, 'How long have you been dead?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'It is all unclear. I was blind with the power. Gods, the power!'
Ghost of Girian raises his head.
Ghost of Girian says, 'What do you want of me? Speak true or be gone.'
You say, 'I am a lorekeeper. I am trying to find the owner of an old journal I found. I know it belongs to the son of a powerful magician.'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Yes, I had a son. I...misjudged him. I had everything, but I lost it all.'
You say, 'How did you lose everything?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Liod was always the weak one. Or maybe I was. In hindsight, it is all unclear. It was so long ago...'
You say, 'Liod was your son?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Yes, my only son. And he killed me.'
You say, 'Your own son killed you?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Not directly, no. He used my creations against me. I had been so careful in their making. So many security measures. I did not plan for my own son to betray me, though.'
You say, 'Creations?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'It took so much work. I couldn't believe it when I succeeded. They were so powerful, virtually unstoppable.'
You say, 'What exactly were they?'
Ghost of Girian looks directly at you. 'A mutation. A fusion of the puma that runs wild in the deserts surrounding this city and the followers of mine lucky enough to be chosen. They were so beautiful!
You say, 'Wait, you fused a puma with a human?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Yes, it was the greatest of my accomplishments. It was difficult to continue all those months. The screams were unending. But I had to continue. I could not give up. I was so close to complete control of the city. Those mutations were the key to my eventual domination of Freeport.'
You say, 'My god...how did you do this?'
Ghost of Girian scoffs. 'Like I would tell one such as you. Suffice to say it took an amazing amount of control over raw magical energy for the mutation to happen the way I wanted it to. There were so many failures. I had almost given up hope.'
You say, 'Where did you get the idea for this?'
Ghost of Girian says, 'One of my servant's children was born a mutant. Horrible red eyes, poinetd ears. An abomination. I told them I killed it. In truth, it became the foundation for my study of mutation. I learned so much from the experiments on that child.'
You say, 'You're a monster!'
Ghost of Girian shrugs. 'I've had a long time to think about this. I've come to the conclusion that there is no right or wrong. There is only power. Most people are too stupid to realize this. Luckily there are people like me smart enough to exploit that stupidity.
You say, 'No wonder your son killed you.'
Ghost of Girian says, 'For a time I thought I had just been outwitted by him. That he, like me, was drawn to power. I have come to believe I was wrong. I think he was weak, like you. Like everybody in this damn world.'
You say, 'Morality is not weakness.'
Ghost of Girian says, 'Oh but it is. Our time together is almost at an end, <Player Race>. Do you have anything else you wish to say to me?'
You say, 'You are a horrible person.'
Ghost of Girian says, 'So be it. You could not think I would let you leave here with knowledge of my existence, did you?'
Ghost of Girian stops glowing.
Kill Ghost of Girian.
Return to Lorekeeper Firinis.
You say, 'Hail, Lorekeeper Firinis'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Oh, you found Girian! Unbelievable!'
You gain 60000 experience!!
You say, 'He was a terrible person.'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'I am sorry I couldn't tell you more about my theory. But you came through, anyways, <Player Name>. Amazing. I always thought the Scattering had to have an influence other than randomness. It happened so quickly, it seems. If Girian was responsible for the creation of an entirely new race simply through manipulation of magical energy, there is no telling what those that came after him did.'
You say, 'I wonder what happened to Liod.'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'That is a good question. The Liodreth seemed to have named their entire race after him. You should see if you can find out from them what happened in between Girian's assassination and today. It is unlikely you will be able to find complete enough records in their home. You will have to befriend them and speak with them to get the whole truth.'
You say, 'I found a book on one of their leaders. Tyner asked me to find it for him.'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Yes, I know. It was actually that text that inspired my theory. Go speak with the Liodreth. Find the answers!'
You say, 'Isn't it wrong to kill members of a race and then go try to make friends with them soon afterwards?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'There is no wrong or right about it, <Player Name> - there is only the truth. Whatever has to be done to uncover the knowledge must be done. Stop asking questions and go find the answers!'
Once you are amiable to the Liodreths of The Paw speak to Greold of Paw (Lair of Paw at 256, -144 •) .
You say, 'Hail, Greold of Paw'
Greold of Paw says, 'I have heard of your deeds against the enemies of Paw, <Player Name>. What do you wish of the Liodreth?'
You say, 'Could you tell me about your history?'
Greold of Paw says, 'What is it you wish to know, <Player Name>? Our beginnings are not something we are very proud of, but it is no secret among our people.'
You say, 'Who was Liod?'
Greold of Paw says, 'Liod was the son of the man responsible for our creation.'
You say, 'Girian was responsible?'
Greold of Paw looks at you closely. 'Yes, Girian. How do you know that name?'
You say, 'I have spoken with his ghost and sent him from this world for the last time.'
Greold of Paw says, 'Is that so? Girian was a terrible person, and yet our entire race would not exist were it not for his manipulations. We owe him our very existence, and yet it is difficult to forgive his trespasses.'
You say, 'And what of his son?'
Greold of Paw says, 'His son Liod was appalled to learn of his father's work. Girian's work was directly responsible for his faction's control of Freeport. He learned of the potential mutative effects of the raw magical energy being casually thrown around at the time, and devised a method to keep his own faction safe from any harm. As a result, he slowly took control of Freeport, block by block. Until only one opposing group remained.'
You say, 'And that's when he resorted to his experiments?'
Greold of Paw says, 'We believe so. Much of this that we have recorded in our annals comes from Liod himself. Our creation led to Girian's crushing of the last enemy faction, and his control of Freeport. But Girian told no one of his work, not even his own son.'
You say, 'The ghost told me that he had not counted on his own son betraying him.'
Greold of Paw says, 'He engineered into us uncontrollable subsurvience to those of Girian's blood. He did not realize his son would turn on him.'
You say, 'How was Girian finally stopped?'
Greold of Paw says, 'Liod, after learning the truth of his father's work, used our ancestors against him. Liod confronted his father, and was banished from Freeport as a result. But Liod had foreseen this possibility. His escort was ambushed on the way out of the city, his guards killed. Liod led his rescuers back into his father's palace and set them on him. It is not surprising that Girian had a means to stay connected to this world, though.'
You say, 'How did you get to be here?'
Greold of Paw says, 'Even though we had killed the tyrant that inspired so much fear in the people of Freeport, they still looked at our people with fear and disgust. Perhaps since they no longer had Girian to fear, they needed something new. It is disappointing, but unfortunately understandable. Not wishing any further pain to come to those his father had done so much harm to, Liod left Freeport, with our ancestors following him. He was a great man, and lived among us as a hero until his death.'
You say, 'An amazing story. Thank you for sharing it with me.'
Greold of Paw says, 'Of course, <Player Name>. Perhaps if more knew the truth of the Liodreth, we would not be so reviled. We only wish to live in peace. It is why we chose a place so far from Freeport. But, civilization has a way of expanding, and now is almost on our doorstep.'
Return to Lorekeeper Firinis.
You say, 'Hail, Lorekeeper Firinis'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'What an interesting story, <Player Name>. It doesn't completely confirm my theory, but it does lend a good deal of plausibility to it.'
You say, 'You think Girian was responsible for the Scattering?'
Lorekeeper Firinis says, 'Not entirely, no. I believe the mutations were already happening. I think that without Girian's interference, though, there is a strong chance that the Scattering would not have been as widespread. Perhaps only a handful of children would have been born different. I will have to keep looking. Thank you, <Player Name>, for all your help.'
You gain 100000 experience!!
