Tomes or Codices (plural of Codex) can be thought of as Alternate Advancement part 2. Due to client restrictions, new AA's can not be added to Shards of Dalaya, and Tomes are the solution to this. Various tomes exist in the game, be they store bought, quested, or droppped. Tome itself is a blanket term, and 'tome' items aren't necessarily called Tomes at all.

A Tome must be 'filled' with exp to get its benefit. This is done by right clicking the Tome to read it. Any prerequisites or limitations are written within. If you are eligible to use the tome you will receive a message telling you so, and from then on your normal exp bar represents the earned tome experience. For some tomes, the benefit will be gained as you earn experience, for others you will receive no benefit until you level it up completely.

When it is filled it can be disposed of, you do not need to hold on to it any more. A tome is filled when right clicking on it brings up the message "You have learned all you can from this codex." Only one tome can be 'active' at a time, but there is no penalty for switching which tome is active ahead of time. The amount of exp you had in the previous tome is saved, and you can continue right where you left off. The amount of exp a tome needs tends to be measured in equivalent AA levels, and the amount needed vary greatly from tome to tome.

There is no limit to the number of tomes which can be learned. It is safe to switch tomes mid-way, and safe to switch back without losing any progress. A tome may be moved around within a bag without deactivating it. However, if the bag containing the tome is moved in inventory it becomes inactive. Any experience gained will be lost unless the tome is reactivated, another tome is activated, or experience is moved to AAs.

The most common Tome by far, the Codex of Power, can be bought in Erimal library. They cost about 1.7k Platinum per volume, with 5 volumes total, which must be used in turn. To use them, you need 250+ AAs to begin with. Each volume of the codex of power requires 110 AAs to complete (The 200 AA myth).

See how to use Tomes in Character Comparisons here.

Note: Tomes need to be right clicked to be activated; this may be done either from a base inventory slot or from within a container. Once activated, adjust your AA experience percentage accordingly.

Old-World Tomes

It is conjectured (more parses needed) that each of the 9 Emberflow Tomes require 40 AAs to complete.

Ikisith Tomes

In order to begin using any droppable tome from Ikisith, you must hand it in to Apprentice Vaceth (Valley of Erimal  at 1151, 860, -42  • Palace library - first floor) to be translated (much like Ancient Spell Scrolls and Eldritch Spell Scrolls). There is a translation fee of 500 Platinum for level 1 general tomes, 1200 Platinum for level 2 general tomes, 2000 Platinum for level 3 general tomes, 1000 Platinum for level 1 class tomes, and 2000 Platinum for level 2 class tomes. Tomes become no drop after they are translated. This can not be undone.

Bug Bug!
Players must have at least one more platinum with them than the amount required by Apprentice Vaceth to activate their tome.

General tomes

With the exception of "Resistance" tomes which have 6 ranks of similar structure, all Ikisith general tomes have 4 ranks: Tome 1, Tome 2, Opus 1, and Opus 2. Each rank is a prequisite for the next. Tome 1s tend to drop from chests and more difficult dungeon experience mobs. Tome 2s tend to drop from named mobs in Ikisith group experience dungeons. Opuses drop only from raid content.

Class tomes

As the name suggests, these tomes are class-specific. Each tome has 4 ranks. In general, class tome 1s drop similarly to general tome 2s from difficult named group experience dungeon mobs in Ikisith, and they are available for token purchase from Logistician Zi`zi. Class tome 2s are known to drop from Claw Commander Era`velu, Supreme Ritualist Ofgats, and in The Abyss and Tur'Ruj. Class tome 3s and 4s are NO DROP and come from Tier 11+ raid content in Ikisith. It is believed that all class tomes require 80 AAs to complete.
