Find Hyvek Vahl (Southern Waste of Tarhyl • Vah Rehn camp).

Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'Hello, <Player Name>! Mira and I have been talking, and we have a project for you. There's a pair of banners in it for you if you see it to the end.'
You say, 'I'm listening.'
Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'Around the time we both were snatched, it seems each of our houses was planning an expedition to what you call the first ruins. At the time, the city had not been dead for long, but the events were just as shrouded in mystery as they are today. The traveller [sic] overheard us speaking and came to us with assurances that some messages from each have survived--she can sense these things, apparently. I'm not entirely sure I trust her, but it seems like a good enough idea.'
You say, 'So what do you want me to do?'
Hyvek Vahl tells you, 'Go to the first ruins and search around the outskirts. Kill whatever creatures live there now, look for messages from the Vahl expedition, and speak with Mira so that she can help you search for the Shahar counterpart. You'll need this key to decode what you find. Stitch the four corners of the paper back together in a sewing kit, using that key to guide you. It should make for interesting reading.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Liar and the Whore]

You receive Vahl Cipher Key from Hyvek Vahl.

Find Mira Shahar (Southern Waste of Tarhyl  at -1236 1357  • Vah Rehn camp) .

Mira Shahar tells you, 'Let's get down to business, pet.' She favors you with a warm grin. 'Hyvek and I have been talking and we've got a job for you. You can have my Shahar banner if you complete it.'
You say, 'What are the details?'
Mira Shahar tells you, 'Hyvek and I were both taken from about the same time period. It wasn't long after the 'first ruins' became ruins--an optimistic, fearful time when the vah [sic] were pressing out on many frontiers, testing our boundries [sic]. As part of that, the Vah Shahar sent an expedition down to the ruins to try to discern what had happened to the city there, and to see if it was suitible [sic] for us to rebuild it and settle there.'
You say, 'So what would you like me to do?'
Mira Shahar tells you, 'We'd like you to go to the first ruins. Nibble about the outskirts, killing whatever creatures live there now in search of messages from the Shahar expedition. You'll need my cipher key to decode what you find, but as an apprentice you've earned the right to carry it. Sew the four corners of the scroll together in a tailor's kit, using that key to guide you. The traveller [sic] says it will make for interesting reading.'

Your journal has been updated. [The Liar and the Whore]

You receive Shahar Cipher Key from Mira Shahar.

Sivyana/Tarhyl Pledged

Note: If you are pledged to Sivyana or Tarhyl, you must hail the NPCs who normally drop the scrap, shred or fragment you need. It requires 1,000 platinum per scrap or shred (Sivyana mobs), and 2,000 platinum per fragment (Tarhyl mobs).
You say, 'Have you found a piece of a cipher in your time here?'
a sivakian warrior says, 'Yes, I believe that I have. It had the name 'Shahar' on it. Why? What does it matter to you?'
You say, 'Give it to me.'
a sivakian warrior says, 'No.' The Sivakian waggles a finger at you. 'I know what you did to one-eye. I'm not stupid. I won't tell you where the scrap is unless you pay me--say, a thousand platinum. And remember, my corpse won't know where the scrap is any more than you do right now.'
You say, '...fine. Here's the money.'
The Sivakian snatches the money from your hand and flees, leaving a small scrap of paper behind.

You receive Scrap of a Shahar Cipher from a sivakian warrior.

Combining 4 Scraps, Shreds, or Fragments of Shahar/Vahl ciphers will yield one of six completed expedition reports.

Shahar Expedition Reports

Handing in Shahar Expedition Report (Part 1) to Mira Shahar:

Mira Shahar tells you, 'Excellent, pet.' Mira reads over the document with growing interest. 'This is very interesting reading indeed.' She flicks an ear at the traveller. 'What are you up to, I wonder? Pet, you must go deeper into the ruins. Recover more shreds of the message. The traveller is trying to tell me something and I mean to discover what.'

Handing in Shahar Expedition Report (Part 2) to Mira Shahar:

Mira turns the message over in her hands. 'Very interesting, very interesting indeed.' She hands it back to you. 'There are more fragments, no doubt deeper in the ruins.' Mira's gaze wanders over to Hyvek. 'Go there, recover them. I'd like to hear how the expedition turned out.'

Handing in Shahar Expedition Report (Part 3) to Mira Shahar:

Mira reads the message in silence, then returns it to you. 'Here, take this.' She hooks her Shahar banner with a claw and pulls it out of her pack, offering it to you but jerking it away at the last instant. 'As condition of this, pet, you must not reveal any of it to Hyvek.' Seeing that you understand, she gives you the banner.

You receive Shahar Banner.

Vahl Expedition Reports

Handing in Vahl Expedition Report (Part 1) to Hyvek Vahl:

Hyvek Vahl says, 'Mrr...' Hyvek reads over the message a second time. 'This *is* interesting, Wuuc. It seems the traveller was right, as she often is.' He pushes one ear off to the side and flicks the other at the paper before handing it back to you. 'It seems you must dive deeper to learn what became of them. Press inward, recover more shreds of the message, repeat the process so we can hear the end of this story.'

Handing in Vahl Expedition Report (Part 2) to Hyvek Vahl:

Hyvek Vahl says, 'This... this is not what I expected. It reeks of the traveller, but as I said, she is often right... I should very much like to see where she is going with this.' He hands the message back to you, seeming loath to part with it. 'I have no doubt that there is a lesson for us in here somewhere. Go deeper into the first ruins, Wuuc. Find the last fragments of the messages.'

Handing in Vahl Expedition Report (Part 3) to Hyvek Vahl:

Hyvek is quiet for a long time after reading the message. Eventually, he hands it back to you, along with a Vahl banner. 'It would be best if you didn't speak to Mira about what you've seen in these messages, Wuuc.'

You receive Vahl Banner.

You say, 'That's funny, Mira said the same thing.'
Hyvek's mouth hangs open for a fraction of a second before he starts to laugh. 'Oh she did, did she?'
