Find Genklog the Curious (The Murk  at -1140, -810, 27  • Gruplok City) .

You say, 'Hail, Genklog the Curious'
You startle him and he drops his notes into the swamp.
Note: If you have the faction, you'll get the journal update and the new quest:
"I've made Genklog drop his notes into the waters of the swamp. He probably wants them back."

Swim around in the swamp underneath Genklog's vantage point.

Note: Have an open spot in your bags for this next step. If you fail to have room, you can keep looking and you'll get the emote again. No confirmation on whether or not this creates a new item.
After fishing around in the swamp for a few minutes, you come up with a soggy bunch of leaves covered in writing. These must be Genklog's notes!

You receive Genklog's Notes.

Give Genklog's Notes to Genklog the Curious.

Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Oh thank you, THANK you!'

Your faction standing with The Gruplok has gotten better!

You gain 2500 experience!!

You say, 'Hail, Genklog the Curious'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Well! I don't suppose you peeked at my notes before you returned them?'
You say, 'Yes, I did.'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Ah, yes, I could tell by looking at you that you have a hungry mind. That's the best survival tool, I've found! Just look at me! Surrounded by death, despair.. destruction. But I keep an active mind! Studying.. learning! We Gruplok know the secrets of the ancient swamp, but much has changed and this modern landscape is a puzzle even to our historians. Did you know that there are species here today that simply did not exist only ten years ago?'

or

You say, 'No, I did not.'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Really? Not curious at all? Hmm.. It's my guess that you will not get far with that attitude toward your environment. Look at me.
You say, 'Oh really, like what?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Good! Good. The active mind! All my information is imported, you understand, but I have heard murmurs concerning a family of beasts near the tower to the north: notoriously cowardly, covered in fur, with sickening pink tails. One of your number called them 'shrews'! A ridiculous name. I would very much like to see one, or as much of one as can be transported if you catch my meaning.'
Note: The dialog correctly refers to the area to the North, but the journal entry refers to an area near the tunnel to the East:
Genklog praised my inquisitive nature and asked for my help in studying the cowardly shrews that have made a home by the cave to the east. He didn't say how, exactly, but I have a feeling that finesse is not necessary.

Gather and give Shrew Tail to Genklog the Curious.

Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Ugh! Perfectly disgusting pink flesh. But observe the annelidous ridging! The hairs grooved in parallel. Yes, this must have been quite a difficult beast to capture or kill! Job well done!'
Genklog the Curious scribbles a further set of notes.

You gain 5000 experience!!

You say, 'Hail, Genklog the Curious'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Well that squares away our debt for soaking my notes, I guess. I wish I had anything to offer to tempt you into helping further, but.. Well as you can see, there is not much here that any of you would want.'
You say, 'Never mind that, I'm happy to help!'
Genklog the Curious sputters excitedly. "Well, well that's just perfect! I knew you were a kindred spirit when first I laid eyes on you. Fate, though unkind recently, certainly has a way of making sure the right people meet, doesn't it? There is no sense in fighting destiny! And destiny commands that you fetch for me tissue samples from the murkwater amphibians."
You say, 'Murkwater amphibians?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Why yes! New to the swamp and curiously formed... I heard about them only recently from one you lot, a newcomer to the swamp. He was new, like you, but much different, physically. Much, much larger--and roundish. Strong-looking fellow. What do they call the ones like that?'
You say, 'ogre'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Ogre, ogre, yes that sounds familiar. Please do not think me rude, but he stank of some foul, fermenting Swill. He offered me a taste of it from a mug he carried with him, but the stench was unfathomably rancid. He also seemed rather not himself, as I have met.. ogres.. since who were considerably more in control of themselves. Regardless, he said they jumped right up from the swamp at various places around the Murk. He said they had skin very similar to ours. I must see it!'

You gain 8000 experience!!

You say, 'I will find you this amphibian skin.'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Why stop at one? No, a good study always requires at least four samples.'

Have a tankard of Ogre Swill in your inventory to spawn a murkwater ranids and a murkwater bufons.

Gather and give four Scrap of Murkwater Skin to Genklog the Curious.

Your faction standing with The Gruplok has gotten better!

You gain 15000 experience!!

Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Amazing! So like my own skin only.. there is something almost other-worldly about it. Yes, this will be a great project for quite some time!' Genklog pauses to clear his throat, he is breathing a little heavily. 'Now, there is more work to do!

You say, 'More?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Oh! Wonderful!,' Genklog pauses to cough abruptly. 'Please excuse me, I've been on a bit of an adventure recently and it has left me.. a little under the weather.'
You say, 'What sort of adventure?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Well, I heard the most marvelous tale of a beast in this very swamp.. an amazing animal! Larger than a hut! Easily larger than two huts! I had to see it, but conditions being what they are.. well it took some doing.'
You say, 'How did you manage to go?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'One of my kindred spirits took pity on me! Gertund, the clever trapper, took me along on his excursion to fell the beast.' Another cough wracks Genklog's frail body. 'Well, they failed to fell the beast, and no wonder! But I got a glimpse and it was astonishing.. I took so many notes but then.. well..'
You say, 'What happened?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'The beast took a swipe at me! Quite some distance away and trapped but vicious even still.. and the fool thing tore my notes right out of my hands! Oh, Gertund will never take me back there again. Too dangerous he says, Hah! But, oh, maybe he will take you? Ask him for me would you? Tell him I sent you. Oh, please!'
You say, 'Of course I will.'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Thank you! Oh, you've been so kind..'
Genklog wipes a trickle from the corner of his mouth.

Find Gertund the Trapper (The Murk  at -1057, -1260, 28  • Roams around this location) .

You say, 'Genklog sent me'
Gertund the Trapper tells you, 'Genklog? That old fool begged me to have him along on a trip to the north-east. That's dangerous territory already, what with the lizards so close, but we were on the look-out for something a lot meaner. A giant, scaly beast. Colored so bright you know he doesn't care who sees him as he's top of the food chain. The fellows called him Hrugtah, meaning snake-eater, and the name stuck. If you get tired of life and want a quick end, Ravenous Hrugtah will serve it up quick mark my words! I've seen him swallow whole things that would give you a fright, I promise.'
You say, 'He said he dropped his notes on that outing and he asked me to get them back.'
Gertund the Trapper tells you, 'Hah. You have to understand, it was a brilliant trap design. Just one-of-a-kind engineering and a mountain of good luck that trapped that beast. Now he's completely immobilized--stuck to the earth, but it doesn't matter. No one can get close enough to kill him! He's hungry as the swamp and a hundred times as deadly. If the old man sent you to toy with Ravenous Hrugtah, you just go back and tell him you appreciate the sentiment, but you enjoy having your limbs attached properly. Hah!'

Gather a Young Snake Flesh.

Find Ravenous Hrugtah (The Murk) (The Murk  at 1720, 2530  •) and use the Bait effect from Young Snake Flesh on it, then lead Ravenous Hrugtah to a baby murkwater serpent (The Murk  at 110, 3770  • 10 of them in a pit) to spawn (Unknown).

Note: The clicky range is short and when you use it the gator WILL CHASE YOU! Run the gator back to the camp of baby murkwater serpent. Make sure you have him run directly through the middle of the snakes. The gator will stop attacking you to feed on the snakes, then despawn. You have 30 seconds to pick up the ground spawn he leaves behind.

Give Scroll Case to Genklog the Curious.

You gain 22500 experience!!

Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Oh! Oh, and they're still legible. Thank you, thank you, so.' Genklog breathes deeply and coughs, this time, you are sure you see blood.'
You say, 'What in the world happened to you?'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'I'm afraid I wasn't quite honest with you, Cyrl. The beast got more than a swipe at me. Heh, in fact I would say I am intimately familiar with the structure of its teeth and claws. No picture would do them justice, though I owe it to future scientists to do the best rendering I can manage.'
You say, 'That sounds serious, you should probably--'
'Still!' Genklog interrupts you, 'Still there is more work to be done. There is one more beast I must investigate vicariously. Will you do me this favor?'
You say, 'An investigation? Of course!'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Somewhere in the swamp, there is a beast unlike anything I have seen before. This information comes not from one of your fellow travelers, but from a fellow Gruplok! So I know it is something most fascinating. I know nothing of it, that is what frustrates me, the Gruplok died from his wounds shortly after seeing this marvelous beast. Hah.. another brother in arms.'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'You will know it... you will know a beast seen only in nightmares. Will you find this beast for me?'
You say, 'I will begin the search immediately!'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Wonderful.. wonderful.. Go, then.. and when you return, I expect a full report!'
You say, 'Hail, Genklog the Curious'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'Did you find the beast? Did you see it?'
You say, 'Yes! And what a creature it was!'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'At last... well then,' Genklog readies a parchment and quill with hands that suddenly seem old and frail. 'Tell me, where did you find the beast?
Note: Genklog the Curious will ask you several questions about this monster. Which options you pick will not change the final outcome of the quest (possible alignment shift?)
Genklog the Curious Genklog finishes his notes with a flourish, then slumps back to the ground. "I thank you profoundly."'
You say, 'It was my pleasure.'
Genklog the Curious tells you, 'I wish I had something more substantial to give you but perhaps.. for a fellow scientist.. this will be enough.' Genklog adds his most recent notes to a large, bound tome and then, with a smile, presents it to you.'
