The novice Alchemist must learn of only two types of ingredients, Solvents and Herbs. The herbs bring with them special properties that are greatly enhanced by the solvent they are combined with.
There are many herbs that can be found in the wild or be purchased from the local Alchemists shop. If you'd like to learn more about the different types of herbs, the local Alchemists shop would be a great place to start.
